Mikel Arteta has come to the defence of Arsenal's forward Kai Havertz, who faced criticism after a lacklustre performance against Manchester United. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with United winning 5-3 on penalties at the Emirates Stadium. Despite playing with an extra man for about an hour due to Diogo Dalot's red card, Arsenal couldn't capitalise.
Havertz missed several clear chances and was the only player not to score in the penalty shoot-out, as his attempt was saved by Altay Bayindir. The German forward led all players with five shots and 11 touches in the area but failed to convert any opportunities, accumulating an expected goals (xG) tally of 0.8.

Arteta remains supportive of Havertz and his attacking teammates. He stated, "To him and to all of them, I love them, we all love them. Individually and collectively, they are a joy." Arteta emphasised the team's consistent performance every three days despite recent results.
Arsenal had been eliminated from the FA Cup just days after losing 2-0 to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup semi-finals first leg. During the match against Manchester United, Martin Odegaard missed a penalty saved by Bayindir when the score was tied at 1-1.
The Gunners attempted 26 shots compared to United's seven, achieving an xG of 3.22 against their opponents' 0.27. They also had 55 touches inside the box compared to United's 13. Despite these statistics, they couldn't find more goals.
Arteta expressed disbelief over their FA Cup exit: "With the amount of situations, chances, penalties that we had, you have to score more and we didn't." He added that while they were deeply disappointed, he remained proud of his players' efforts.
Adding to Arsenal's woes was Gabriel Jesus' injury; he was stretchered off late in the first half after scoring six goals in his last six matches. This has led fans to urge Arsenal to sign a new striker during the January transfer window.
However, Arteta trusts his current squad: "I understand that [transfer talk] but I cannot love our players more and we very much focus on the players we have to perform at the highest level," he said. He acknowledged that transfer decisions are beyond his control.
Arsenal will face Tottenham next in Premier League action on Wednesday. By then, they could trail league leaders Liverpool by nine points. Despite recent setbacks, Arteta remains focused on improving team confidence and performance.
