Arteta Bemoans Referee Inconsistency Following Rice's Red Card In Arsenal Draw

Arsenal's Mikel Arteta voiced frustration over refereeing after a 1-1 draw with Brighton. Declan Rice's red card for delaying play sparked debate on officiating consistency, ending Arsenal's winning streak.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed frustration with the referees after his team drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners played most of the second half with 10 men following Declan Rice's red card for a second bookable offence. Arteta questioned the consistency of the referee's decisions, particularly regarding time-wasting.

Arteta highlighted inconsistencies in officiating during his post-match interview with TNT Sports. "If that happens throughout the game in a consistent way, that's fine," he said. "But it didn't happen. In the first half, there were a number of occasions where they kicked the ball away and nothing happened." He emphasised that if Arsenal had to play with 10 men, Brighton should have faced similar consequences.

Arteta Critiques Referee Post-Arsenal Draw

Despite his frustration over Rice's dismissal, Arteta found positives in his team's performance. Arsenal took the lead through Kai Havertz's second goal of the season after 38 minutes but conceded an equaliser in the second half following Rice's red card. "We started the game really good, created three or four big chances," Arteta noted. "We started the second half really good, had some good moments and momentum and obviously that decision changes the game completely."

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler had a different perspective on Rice's red card. "It was a red card; he shoots the ball away. He was wasting time," Hurzeler stated during his post-match press conference. He acknowledged that while Arsenal might disagree, differing opinions are part of football.

Hurzeler also addressed a similar incident involving Joao Pedro, who appeared to avoid punishment for kicking the ball away. "You can't compare the two situations," he said. "In football, two situations are never the same." He mentioned being booked himself for complaining about a tackle on Joel Veltman in the first half.

The match saw Arsenal's eight-match winning run in the Premier League come to an end. Despite playing with 10 men for nearly 50 minutes, Arteta praised his team's resilience and believed they deserved to win. "It was unbelievable the way the team reacted [after the goal] with 10 men, playing 48 minutes; we should have won the game," he said.

The contrasting views of Arteta and Hurzeler highlight ongoing debates about refereeing consistency in football. While Arteta felt aggrieved by perceived inconsistencies, Hurzeler defended the referee's decisions as part of Premier League standards.

The draw leaves both teams reflecting on their performances and looking ahead to their next fixtures. Arsenal will aim to bounce back from this setback, while Brighton will seek to build on their solid display against one of the league's top sides.
