Arteta Maintains Strong Relationship With Guardiola Despite Title Fight Tensions

Mikel Arteta reassures that his friendship with Pep Guardiola is unaffected by the competitive title race. Despite criticisms of Arsenal's tactics in their recent match against Manchester City, Arteta emphasises the importance of personal relationships over professional rivalries.

Mikel Arteta maintains that the ongoing title race between Arsenal and Manchester City will not impact his friendship with Pep Guardiola. Last Sunday, the two teams played to a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Premier League. City managed to secure a late equaliser after Arsenal, reduced to ten men, defended resolutely throughout the second half.

Leandro Trossard was sent off just before halftime for receiving a second yellow card due to time-wasting. Arsenal faced criticism for their tactics during the match. The Gunners spent over nine minutes on goal-kicks, setting a season record in the Premier League. Their average delay for restarts was 42.7 seconds, only surpassed by Aston Villa versus Wolves at 47.3 seconds.

Arteta and Guardiola's Friendship Remains Strong

Several Manchester City players have voiced their disapproval of Arsenal's approach, leading to disputes on the field. However, Arteta is confident that these disagreements will not harm his relationship with Guardiola. "I love him [Guardiola]. I respect him and admire him. I admire his team and everything he does," Arteta stated.

Arteta emphasised that professional competition should not interfere with personal relationships. "This is sport. One thing is our professional, another is my personal relationship," he explained. He added that if playing against each other were to damage their friendship, it wouldn't be worth it.

When questioned about whether accusations against Arsenal might affect his relationship with Guardiola, Arteta responded: "It depends." He believes integrity and doing what one thinks is right are crucial. "If you don't like them, you shouldn't be sitting where I am," he remarked regarding opinions.

Upcoming Challenges for Arsenal

The Gunners are set to face Leicester City in their next Premier League match on Saturday. Arteta remains focused on maintaining strong relationships with those he has worked closely with over the years, including both staff and players.

Arteta concluded by expressing his commitment to handling personal relationships carefully despite professional challenges. His focus remains on ensuring that sportsmanship does not hinder friendships developed through years of collaboration.
