Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed mixed emotions after his team drew 2-2 with Aston Villa, despite leading by two goals. This result leaves Arsenal six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, having played one more match. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz initially put Arsenal ahead, but Villa's Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins equalised.
The draw extended Arsenal's unbeaten run in the league to 12 games. However, Arteta believes his team deserved a better outcome. "We were unbelievable. I am so proud of the way we played and how dominant and how fluid we were and how much we put into it," he told BBC Sport. Despite their efforts, Arsenal has dropped 12 points from winning positions this season, the most since the 2019-20 campaign.

Arteta praised his team's performance against Villa, describing it as their best against such a strong side. Yet, he acknowledged the need to secure results. "The speed, energy, quality and level of the performance... But we need to get the result in," he added.
A chaotic eight-minute spell in the second half saw Villa score twice, undoing Arsenal's earlier good work. This was the first time since October 2019 that Arsenal failed to win a home game after leading by two or more goals. Arteta remarked on the fine margins against Villa: "We were nowhere near the standards of what we demand."
Arsenal thought they had secured victory when Mikel Merino's shot deflected off Havertz into the net. However, VAR overturned it due to a handball by Havertz. Arteta commented on this decision: "Yes, I have seen it. From one angle it doesn’t look [handball] and from another angle it does look handball." He noted that there were other missed opportunities that could have sealed the win.
Looking ahead, Arsenal will face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League next. They have accumulated 13 points from six matches in this competition so far.
Despite recent setbacks, Arteta remains optimistic about his team's potential and is focused on improving results in upcoming fixtures.
