Bengaluru, December 11: It is believed Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta suffered a bruise above his eye during a post-match fracas after the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's Man City were 2-1 winners against Jose Mourinho's Manchester United, extending their lead over the second-placed United by 11 points. David Silva opened the scoring for City, while Marcus Rashford scored the equaliser. Nicolas Otamendi later scored the winner for City.

The match was not without controversy with Mourinho claiming that his side were denied a clear penalty when Ander Herrera went down to a challenge by Nicolas Otamendi late in the second half.

The tiff, it is believed, continued at the Old Trafford tunnel, where Mourinho asked City players to keep their celebrations low-key. Mourinho also walked into the referees' chamber and had a word with referee Michael Oliver over the Herrera incident.

City players, however, did not heed to the United manager, leading to a row among 20 players.

According to witnesses, United striker Romelu Lukaku threw a bottle on Arteta, while Mourinho himself was splashed with water after an argument with City goalkeeper Ederson. Arteta has suffered a cut as a result of the bottle-throwing.

Police officers later got involved and stopped the fight.

The incident is similar to 2004's battle of the buffet, when former Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas, now with Chelsea, threw a pizza slice at former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after the Red Devils ended the Gunners' 49-match unbeaten streak.

Mourinho believes that the decision from referee Michael Oliver not to award a penalty to United after the Herrera foul in the 79th minute cost his side the match. Herrera was instead booked for diving.

The United boss told Sky Sports: "Clear penalty. I'm sorry for us, for Michael, I think he had a good game but it's a clear penalty. Don't you agree?

"The referee made a mistake, which can happen. Last season, we had a similar situation against Manchester City, who were winning 2-1 and Mr [Mark] Clattenburg didn't see the penalty of Bravo on Rooney.

"I'm sorry for Michael Oliver because he had a good performance.

"He is a human being, he tried his best, he was very committed to have a good match, which I think he had. But he made one mistake and it was the crucial mistake for the result of the match."
