Arteta Acknowledges Arsenal's Title Challenge Despite Recent Victory Over Brentford

Mikel Arteta stated that Arsenal's Premier League title aspirations remain uncertain despite a recent victory against Brentford. The Gunners closed the gap to leaders Liverpool but face challenges ahead, with an Opta prediction of just a 9.5% chance of winning the title.

Mikel Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal's pursuit of the Premier League title remains uncertain, even after their 3-1 victory over Brentford narrowed the gap to leaders Liverpool. Arsenal now trails Arne Slot's team by six points. Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli overturned Bryan Mbeumo's early strike. This marked Arsenal's first comeback win in a Premier League away match since February 2023 against Aston Villa.

Despite their recent success, Arteta admitted that the title is not within Arsenal's control. "We can only win our next match and see what happens. It's not in our hands, but what is in our hands, we need to make sure we do it," Arteta stated. The Opta supercomputer gives Arsenal just a 9.5% chance of winning their first Premier League title since 2003-04.

Arteta on Arsenal's Title Chances After Win

Arteta praised his team's performance against Brentford, highlighting their expected goals (xG) total of 1.95 from 14 attempts compared to Brentford's 0.29 from two shots. He also commended goalscorers Jesus and Martinelli for their recent form. Jesus has netted six times in his last four appearances across all competitions, matching his previous tally from 48 games.

Gabriel Jesus has been instrumental for Arsenal, scoring in consecutive away games for the first time since April 2023. Martinelli has also been impressive, scoring three goals in his last four Premier League away matches, surpassing his previous record of two goals in 26 away appearances.

"Very good timing, both of them, really important," Arteta said about Jesus and Martinelli. "It's a big quality of our team to share the goals across the team." He emphasized the importance of having players who are consistently performing well and contributing to the team's success.

Brentford's Struggles

Thomas Frank reflected on Brentford's narrow defeat, attributing it to minor defensive errors that led to all three Arsenal goals. Mark Flekken's mishandling allowed Jesus to equalize, while subsequent defensive lapses were punished by Arsenal in the second half.

Since last season began, Brentford has lost 47 points from winning positions in the Premier League—30 last season and 17 this season—more than any other team. They have yet to keep a clean sheet at home this season and have gone 11 consecutive home league matches without one for the first time since October 2007.

Frank's Perspective on Performance

"I think we did a lot of things right and overall it was a good performance," Frank commented on his team's display against Arsenal. He praised their bravery on the ball and under pressure during the first half but acknowledged that they need to improve further if they want to beat teams like Arsenal.

The result highlights Brentford's ongoing challenges with maintaining leads and securing clean sheets at home. Frank emphasized that beating top teams requires flawless execution throughout the match.

The recent match underscores both teams' current standings: Arsenal continues its pursuit of Liverpool while Brentford grapples with defensive issues at home. Both managers recognize areas for improvement as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
