Dowman: Arteta Urges Media To Keep The Temperature Down On Rising Arsenal Talent

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has asked the media to temper their praise of 16-year-old Max Dowman after he became the Premier League's youngest goalscorer. While Dowman's breakthrough drew attention, Arteta emphasises development and measured minutes to protect the youngster's progress as Arsenal prepare for Champions League action.

Mikel Arteta has urged restraint around Max Dowman after the teenager became the youngest scorer in Premier League history. The 16-year-old struck Arsenal’s second goal in a 2-0 victory over Everton, yet Arteta stressed that expectations must stay realistic as Arsenal balance development with competitive targets.

Dowman has featured for only 46 minutes in the Premier League so far, across brief substitute appearances. Despite that small sample, Dowman already holds a major record and has drawn strong media attention, which includes talk of rapid international promotion and comparisons with some of football’s biggest names.

Dowman: Arteta asks calm media

The goal against Everton set a new benchmark that had stood since April 2005. Dowman overtook James Vaughan, who scored in a 4-0 win for Everton against Crystal Palace, then also coached by David Moyes. Arteta was on the pitch that day as an Everton midfielder and scored in that game.

Dowman’s effort at the Emirates was not his only decisive action in the match. Earlier, Dowman delivered a late cross from the left that Jordan Pickford misread in the 89th minute, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to capitalise for Arsenal’s opener, which changed the tone of a tight contest.

Analytics highlighted the scale of Dowman’s solo effort for his historic strike. Opta reported that Dowman carried the ball 61.3 metres before finishing his breakaway against Everton, placing the teenager’s run among the longest ball carries leading to a goal in Premier League records.

Dowman has played only seven senior matches in all competitions and is still attending school. That has not stopped speculation that Dowman could receive an England call-up for this year’s World Cup. Former Chelsea defender John Terry even likened Dowman’s style to Lionel Messi’s, intensifying focus on the teenager.

Arteta responded by making a public request for calm before Arsenal’s Champions League meeting with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. "We need to bring the temperature down and understand what the best thing is for this boy at this age," said the Arsenal manager, who praised Dowman while pushing back against hype.

Arteta underlined that achievement alone is not enough to dictate the next steps. "He's doing something phenomenal, we all know that. Let's keep it down a little bit and respect the nature to do what he has to doI'm sure hes going to do something really good." Arteta wants progress to follow a measured timeline.

Asked whether Arteta shared the wider enthusiasm around Dowman’s potential, the coach pointed instead to selection choices. "My way to express it is to give him game time. What else can I do? The rest is in your hands. Yes, very exciting. Enough!" Arteta said, acknowledging Dowman’s form while challenging outside noise.

Dowman missed much of the season with injury, yet Arteta now considers the forward ready for more consistent involvement. "Yeah, regularly, depending on what you call regularly," Arteta said. "Depending on the game and how he reacts, I think his reaction has been really positive, and in relation to what we need in the game, there's always a possibility [he will play]."

Arteta also stressed that Dowman’s impact against Everton must be viewed within football’s constant demands. "To do what he did in such a moment, very rare to see or impossible almost. He’s done it and now it’s football and what you’ve done a few days ago is not relevant anymore, it’s about the next one." That outlook frames how Arsenal plan Dowman’s next steps.
