Arteta Praises Nwaneri's EFL Cup Performance While Advising Caution For Premier League Debut

Mikel Arteta commended Ethan Nwaneri for his impressive performance in the EFL Cup but urged caution regarding his potential start in the Premier League. Nwaneri, now 17, has shown significant growth since becoming the youngest player in the league.

Mikel Arteta commended Ethan Nwaneri following his two goals for Arsenal against Bolton Wanderers, yet advised caution regarding a Premier League start. Nwaneri scored on both sides of halftime, aiding the Gunners' young squad to progress to the EFL Cup's fourth round. Jack Porter, Josh Nichols, and Myles Lewis-Skelly made their full debuts, while Maldini Kacurri and Ismeal Kabia contributed off the bench.

Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling, and Kai Havertz also found the net in Arsenal's convincing win. Sterling scored his first goal for Arsenal in his debut start. Arteta's team will face Preston North End next, a stage they reached last season before losing to West Ham. Arteta praised Nwaneri, who became the youngest Premier League player at 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in 2022.

Arteta Warns Nwaneri on Premier League Steps

Now 17, Nwaneri has appeared four times for Arsenal's first team. Arteta noted that Nwaneri has exceeded initial expectations. "On the second one I was really happy for him because he scored. I'm very happy because I know the reaction of his teammates if he wouldn't," Arteta stated. He added that Nwaneri's performance was strong and that he plays with confidence and understanding.

Sterling had a positive night as well, marking his first goal for Arsenal with an expected goals (xG) tally of 0.85 out of Arsenal’s total 3.03. His three shots on target were more than any other player on the team. With an upcoming home match against Leicester in the Premier League, Arteta sees Sterling making strides toward earning a league start.

Arteta expressed satisfaction with Sterling’s progress: "Yeah, it was very good. I think he's getting better and better." He highlighted Sterling’s physical improvement and involvement in several goals during the game as indicators of his growing impact on the team.

Arteta emphasized that while Nwaneri is ahead of expectations in his journey with the first team, starting in the Premier League represents another level entirely. The coach assured that Nwaneri will continue to receive playing time due to his impressive performances and integration into the squad.

The match against Bolton showcased Arsenal’s promising young talents alongside experienced players like Sterling stepping up effectively. As they prepare for future challenges, these performances provide a solid foundation for both immediate success and long-term development within the club.
