Asian Games 2023 women's football competition kicks off with the group stage on Thursday (September 21) followed by the knockout stages that will conclude with the medals matches on October 6.
A totals of 16 teams, including India, South Korea, Japan and China among others will do battle for the medals, starting with the group stage, which sees the teams divided into five groups.

Two groups will contain three teams each, while two will contain four teams each with one other group, which originally contained three teams, being reduced to two following the withdrawal of Cambodia.
In the group stage, each team will play in single round-robin format with the top team on the respective group's points table heading into the knockout stage, which will start with the quarterfinals.
Apart from the five group winners, three best second-placed teams also will get a chance to enter the last 8 stage, which kicks off on September 30 with the winners earning an entry into the semifinal, scheduled to take place on October 3.
The semifinals will see the four quarterfinal winners clash for the right to play in the gold medal match, while the losers will clash for the bronze medal in the third-place playoff. The medal matches will take place on October 6.

There are five groups in the women's football competition. However, not every group has the same number of teams as the draw was first of all made with 17 teams, but one team pulled out to reduce the number of teams to 16.

Note: Top team from every group progress directly to the last 8, where they will be joined by the three best second placed team from four groups. Group C which has only two teams will not be considered for the best second-placed teams standings.
