Aston Villa Triumphs Over Cardiff City 2-0 With Marco Asensio's Brace In FA Cup Match

Marco Asensio's two goals propelled Aston Villa into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City at Villa Park. Despite Cardiff's strong defence, Villa dominated the match. Ethan Horvath, Cardiff's goalkeeper, was in excellent form, making seven crucial saves to keep his team in contention.

In the first half, Villa found it challenging to penetrate Cardiff's defence. Asensio narrowly missed a shot in the 17th minute. Leon Bailey also tested Horvath with a powerful shot, and Marcus Rashford missed a significant opportunity from close range shortly after.

After halftime, Villa continued their offensive efforts. John McGinn and Rashford both had attempts saved by Horvath. However, Cardiff's resistance eventually crumbled when Rashford and Asensio combined for the opening goal. Rashford delivered a precise cross that Asensio converted from inside the box.

Asensio secured his second goal and Villa's lead ten minutes before the final whistle. After receiving a pass from Bailey, he skillfully curled the ball into the bottom right corner. This marked his fourth goal since joining on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January.

Rashford has embraced his new role at Villa under Unai Emery. Since debuting on 9 February, he has created more chances than any other Premier League player (13). All three of his assists have led to goals by Asensio.

Against Cardiff, Rashford created six chances, matching his record for any game during his time at Manchester United (six against Wigan Athletic in January 2024). This victory is significant for Villa as they reach an FA Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2014-15 when they lost to Arsenal in the final.
