Aston Villa Advances To Champions League Quarter-Finals With 3-0 Victory Over Club Brugge

Aston Villa triumphed over Club Brugge with a 3-0 win in the Champions League, advancing with a 6-1 aggregate score. Marco Asensio starred with two goals.

Aston Villa secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Club Brugge. This win, achieved on Wednesday, resulted in a 6-1 aggregate triumph. Villa had already established a 3-1 lead from the first leg, setting up a clash with Paris Saint-Germain, who overcame Liverpool on penalties.

Club Brugge started the second leg strongly, causing some early concerns for Villa. However, their task became significantly harder when Kyriana Saba was dismissed for fouling Marcus Rashford in the 16th minute. Despite having an extra player, Villa struggled to take advantage immediately but found their rhythm after halftime.

Aston Villa Defeats Club Brugge to Advance

Marco Asensio made an immediate impact after being introduced at halftime. He scored from close range in the 50th minute following a pass from Leon Bailey. Ian Maatsen added another goal seven minutes later, converting Morgan Rogers' pull-back with a slight deflection. A VAR review confirmed Maatsen was onside.

Asensio continued to shine by scoring again in the 61st minute after Rashford's assist. His performance delighted the fans at Villa Park. Asensio has been impressive since joining Villa on loan in January, scoring seven goals across all competitions since February. Only Ousmane Dembele has scored more during this period.

Villa's progression to the last eight was never in doubt despite Simon Mignolet denying Matty Cash and Youri Tielemans missing the target. The team has become the ninth English club to reach this stage of the competition, highlighting their growing stature.

Asensio's contribution was crucial as he became the first substitute to score twice for an English club in this tournament since Mohamed Salah's hat-trick against Rangers in October 2022. His form has been pivotal for Villa's success in Europe.

Villa now looks forward to facing Paris Saint-Germain in what promises to be an exciting quarter-final encounter. The team's recent performances have boosted confidence among players and supporters alike as they aim for further success on Europe's biggest stage.
