Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Credits Season Progress After Burnley Draw
Aston Villa moved closer to Champions League qualification with a 2-2 draw at Burnley, yet Unai Emery felt the point still fell short of expectations after a dominant display and a late penalty appeal that was turned down in stoppage time at Turf Moor.
The match swung several times. Jaidon Anthony gave Burnley an eighth-minute lead before Ross Barkley levelled in a lively first half. Ollie Watkins then struck after the break, only for Zian Flemming to finish a flowing move and secure Burnley’s first Premier League point since March 14.

Emery highlighted both control and wastefulness from Aston Villa, who had just reached the Europa League final in midweek and now sit within reach of a top-five finish. The head coach accepted the importance of the draw while stressing that the level of dominance should have produced more than a single point.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Emery said: "Overall we dominated and had the chances to score. It's a good point but not enough for us. I think we deserved more but we needed to be more clinical. We were attacking more in their half than defending in ours, but we conceded three clear chances and conceded two."
Watkins’ second-half goal carried extra significance. The forward recorded Aston Villa’s 1500th goal in the Premier League, making the club the ninth side to reach that total. The strike also continued a season in which Aston Villa have shown strong resilience after falling behind in games across the league campaign.
This latest fightback means Emery’s team have collected 20 Premier League points from losing positions this season, more than any other side. It is also Aston Villa’s second-highest tally for such comebacks in a single Premier League season, behind only the 1993-94 campaign, when the club earned 21 points after trailing.
Emery praised Watkins’ attitude during the season. On the forward’s form, Emery added: "He is doing fantastic, he is a fighter. Three months ago, he was a little down but we always have conversations about being consistent and working for the team every match. Now he is getting the numbers."
Aston Villa vs Burnley draw shaped by key decisions and home struggles
Aston Villa controlled possession for long periods and finished strongly. The main flashpoint arrived late, when Emiliano Buendia went down in the area under a challenge from Kyle Walker. The visitors appealed for a penalty in added time, but the referee waved play on and the decision was not overturned.
Emery accepted the setback in the wider context of an impressive year. The head coach said it remains "very difficult to finish in the top five" but stressed the shared satisfaction at Aston Villa’s progress. Emery pointed to upcoming tests against Liverpool on Friday, Manchester City, and the Europa League final as further markers of a "fantastic" season.

Burnley entered the match already relegated but produced an energetic performance that lifted the home crowd. The draw, however, extended Burnley’s winless Premier League run at Turf Moor to 14 home matches, with five draws and nine defeats, equalling the club’s longest sequence without a home league victory, set between February and October 2021.
Interim manager Michael Jackson expressed satisfaction with the response. Jackson told Sky Sports: "Really pleased with the result today, I'm happy for them as a group. What's done is done. What I've just said to them there is 'don't let anyone tell you that you can't do anything.' A lot of people keep doubting them, but they've come back today, and they've done well. The players need to give something for themselves. Football is about the players, and we're here to help and guide them. They have to go and play the game."
Both teams left Turf Moor with contrasting emotions. Aston Villa edged nearer to Champions League qualification but sensed a missed chance after leading and seeing a late claim rejected, while Burnley secured a morale-boosting point despite relegation and extended home frustration, with players and staff stressing pride, character and commitment in difficult circumstances.
