Aston Villa Manager Unai Emery Hails A Very Serious Performance Against Lille In The Europa League

Unai Emery commended Aston Villa's very serious performance in Lille, where Ollie Watkins scored the decisive goal to secure a 1-0 win in the Europa League last-16 first leg. The result underlines Villa's strong European form and Emery's high regard for organisation and focus across 90 minutes.

Aston Villa claimed a controlled 1-0 win at Lille in the Europa League last 16 first leg, with Ollie Watkins deciding the contest after half-time. Unai Emery praised the disciplined display, as Villa took a narrow but valuable advantage back to Villa Park for the return game.

The result continued Aston Villa’s strong form in Europe, with the team now on six successive Europa League victories. That sequence is their longest run in any major European competition and, in the 2025-26 season, no other club across the three European tournaments has a longer active winning streak.

The win in France also marked Unai Emery’s 100th victory as Aston Villa head coach, adding another milestone to the night. Emery has faced Lille 10 times in all competitions, winning eight, drawing once and losing once, giving an 80% success rate against the French side.

Among opponents Unai Emery has met at least 10 times during a long coaching career, only Rayo Vallecano have seen a higher win percentage from the Spaniard, with Emery winning 10 of 11 games against the Madrid club for a 91% record. Emery again highlighted organisation and structure as central to Villa’s approach.

Key numbers from Aston Villa’s Europa League campaign and Unai Emery’s record against Lille and Rayo Vallecano are set out below to show the scale of their current form and consistency in European competition and across Emery’s career against familiar opponents.

Team / Record Games Wins Draws Losses Win %
Aston Villa – current Europa League run 6 6 0 0 100%
Unai Emery vs Lille (all competitions) 10 8 1 1 80%
Unai Emery vs Rayo Vallecano 11 10 0 1 91%

Emery explained how Aston Villa handled the challenge in France, stressing the importance of structure, respect for the competition and an understanding of the atmosphere when visiting other countries. The head coach felt Villa grew into the game and controlled large spells, especially after the break.

We played a very serious match, [were] organised, respecting the competition, and we know how difficult this match is in Europe, playing in other countries with the atmosphere they have here. For them to play an English team, you can feel it a little bita huge motivation for the opponent. We started the match trying to test how they were tactically, and we were more or less getting better. The first half was equal, but I think we dominate more with the positioning. Second half, we started very good, scoring the goal and having other chances to score. We felt comfortable and confident. We played always with being organised as the first demand.

Ollie Watkins’ header not only settled a tight contest but also ended a personal wait for a European goal. Watkins had gone 12 appearances in major European competition without scoring, with the previous strike coming against Celtic in the Champions League in January 2025.

Emery pointed to Watkins’ off-the-ball work and reliability in carrying out tactical roles, while also stressing that goals must be shared across the squad. The head coach again referred to the seriousness of Aston Villa’s approach and the demand to stay strong for the full 90 minutes.

He [Watkins] is working and being consistent with his task, added Emery. Then, of course, he's scoring, but we need more numbers with the other players. The most important thing is how we played a serious match, always expecting everything and with our game plan to play strongly for 90 minutes.

Aston Villa now hold a 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg at Villa Park, backed by a strong winning sequence in Europe and Emery’s impressive record against Lille. The tie remains finely balanced, but Villa’s organised display in France leaves the Premier League side in a favourable position.
