Aston Villa Leverages European Experience To Secure Victory Against Maccabi Tel Aviv

Aston Villa achieved a 2-0 win against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, drawing on past European experiences. Goals from Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen highlighted their strong performance.

Aston Villa continued their impressive Europa League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv at Villa Park. This win marked their third in four matches, bouncing back from a previous 2-1 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles. Ian Maatsen scored just before half-time, and Donyell Malen added a penalty, though Roi Mishpati's goalkeeping prevented further goals.

Unai Emery praised his team's ability to draw on past European experiences. He noted that the squad is becoming more adept at handling continental challenges, building on lessons from their Conference League journey two years ago. "We were playing solidly and playing seriously," Emery told TNT Sports. "We used our passion and our experience in Europe."

Villa Triumphs Over Maccabi Tel Aviv in Europa League

Villa's home form remains formidable, having lost only once in their last 28 games across all competitions. They have won the last five consecutively. Morgan Rogers assisted Maatsen's goal, bringing his tally to 16 open-play assists over two seasons, second only to Mohamed Salah in the Premier League.

Donyell Malen's penalty was his first non-open play goal in major European competitions. His overall tally stands at 16 goals: eight for PSV, seven for Borussia Dortmund, and one for Villa. The team’s stand-in captain, Ezri Konsa, expressed satisfaction with the win and his leadership role in John McGinn's absence.

Ezri Konsa shared his thoughts on leading the team: "It's always nice to lead the team out. It's a role I've always wanted to do." He acknowledged John McGinn as a great captain and emphasised taking responsibility when McGinn is unavailable. Konsa also highlighted how Emery has influenced his understanding of football.

Villa aims to progress far in the competition, with aspirations similar to other teams vying for victory. Konsa stated, "Every team in the competition wants to go far. Our goal is to win it like everyone else." The players' commitment reflects their ambition to succeed under Emery's guidance.

Emery appreciates players like Malen and Ollie Watkins contributing goals consistently. He believes this scoring ability is crucial for Villa's success in Europe. "Very good because we need players who are scoring goals," he remarked about their performance.

Aston Villa's recent success underscores their growing confidence and capability on the European stage. With Emery at the helm, they continue to build on past experiences while setting sights on future achievements in the Europa League.
