Aston Villa earned a 1-0 victory over Lille in the Europa League last-16 first leg, giving Unai Emery a 100th win with the club and delivering Villa’s first competitive success in France, with Ollie Watkins scoring from the visitors’ only shot on target at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The decisive moment arrived on 61 minutes when Emiliano Buendia flicked a ball into the area and Watkins showed sharp movement to rise above the defender and guide a looping header over advancing goalkeeper Berke Ozer, producing the one clear piece of attacking quality in a tight contest.

Lille applied pressure for long spells and forced errors, yet Emiliano Martinez stood firm when needed, making several stops as Villa struggled to finish the match, while former Lille midfielder Amadou Onana struck the crossbar from distance and Buendia sent an acrobatic attempt narrowly wide late on.

Data from recent seasons highlighted Watkins’ strength in the air, since across the past three campaigns the forward recorded 17 headed goals in all competitions, more than any other Premier League player, although this was only Watkins’ second major European goal in 22 appearances for Villa.

Watkins had gone 12 European games without scoring since finding the net against Celtic on 29 January 2025, so this header ended that run, and with Villa now holding a narrow lead before the return match at Villa Park, Emery could regard the controlled away display, and ruthless finishing, as an effective platform.
