Aston Villa Secure Europa League Final After McGinn Double Seals Comeback Vs Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa reached the Europa League final with a dominant 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit for a 4-1 aggregate success. John McGinn scored twice late on, adding to goals from Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia in a one-sided second leg.

Forest had led through Chris Wood’s penalty from the first match, but Villa controlled almost every moment of the return fixture. After an early Omari Hutchinson attempt went wide, the hosts applied sustained pressure, pinned Forest back, and forced goalkeeper Stefan Ortega into several important saves before the breakthrough arrived.

The tie turned in the 36th minute when Forest failed to clear a long ball over their defence. Buendia gathered possession, beat two defenders with close control, and squared a low pass. Watkins reacted fastest and finished from close range to level the aggregate score and shift the momentum firmly towards Villa.

Villa remained on the front foot after that opener, with Ortega denying Watkins again before half-time. The decisive moment in the tie came on 58 minutes following a VAR review. Nikola Milenkovic was judged to have pulled Pau Torres in the area, the referee awarded a penalty, and Buendia calmly converted from the spot.

Watkins believed a second goal was his moments later, lifting a low shot past Ortega, but the assistant’s flag was raised. Replays showed Watkins had not returned onside before receiving the pass, and the effort was ruled out. Forest then pushed forward, with Wood seeing a low strike smothered by Emiliano Martinez.

That brief Forest response ended when McGinn took charge in midfield. In the 77th minute, Watkins cushioned a pass into McGinn’s path on the edge of the box. McGinn guided a precise effort into the bottom-left corner, then struck again three minutes later, steering another low shot into the opposite corner.

The two decisive finishes sent Villa Park into celebration and confirmed Villa’s place in Istanbul.

McGinn’s double came just 156 seconds apart, making the captain the first Villa player to score a brace in a major European semi-final.

McGinn’s efficiency stood out. All three of McGinn’s attempts hit the target, producing two goals from only 0.28 expected goals. Buendia also delivered a standout display, directly contributing to two goals and controlling attacks between the lines, while Watkins remained a constant threat with movement behind the defence.

Buendia became the first player to both score and assist in a Europa League semi-final for an English club since Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani achieved that for Manchester United against Roma in April 2021. Watkins’ strike was also a landmark, moving Watkins to seven European goals at Villa Park, drawing level with Peter Withe.

Unai Emery extended an already impressive record in this competition. Emery has now progressed from the last 23 two-legged Europa League ties Emery has managed. That run continues after this 4-1 aggregate win, and Aston Villa will now meet Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul.
