Aston Villa Urges Confidence Recovery After Chelsea Defeat, Emery Says

Unai Emery acknowledged Aston Villa’s difficult run after a 4-1 defeat by Chelsea, urging players to rebuild confidence, energy, and tactical structure ahead of Lille and continued league challenges.

Aston Villa’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea at Villa Park leaves Unai Emery admitting the team is struggling. Douglas Luiz scored inside two minutes, but Joao Pedro’s hat-trick and a Cole Palmer goal turned the match. Villa stay fourth, only three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

Despite this setback, Opta’s supercomputer still gives Aston Villa a 63.3% chance of a Premier League top-four finish. That figure is higher than Manchester United on 56.7%, Liverpool on 40.7% and Chelsea on 34.6%, keeping Villa’s season targets within reach.

Aston Villa Urges Confidence Recovery

The match started perfectly for Aston Villa when Douglas Luiz struck after just two minutes. Chelsea responded with control and punished defensive gaps, as Joao Pedro completed a hat-trick and Cole Palmer also scored. Villa’s fourth defeat in eight league matches (W2 D2) underlined their current dip.

Emery highlighted Chelsea’s control, especially before half-time, when speaking to BBC Match of the Day. "Chelsea played a fantastic match and the first half was the key, he told BBC Match of the Day. We were defending and trying to recover the ball, but they had a very good structure and combinations and were creating chances. When they scored the second goal, the match changed a little bit."

Emery acknowledged how the game slipped away after the break and stressed the need for solutions. "After the third and fourth [goals], it was more difficult. There is still a three-point difference between them and us, but now, we are in a bad moment. Now, we have time to recover it and the only way I know is by finding solutions to recover confidence, our energy and tactical structure. This is now my concern. We have two months in front of us, with Europe to play as well."

The defeat ended a long Premier League home sequence for Aston Villa. It was the first time since February 2023, against Arsenal, that Villa lost a league game at Villa Park after holding any lead. That result stopped a 45-match unbeaten run in such situations, which included 39 wins and six draws.

The numbers underline that Aston Villa remain strong contenders in the Premier League race for Champions League places. The Opta model rates Villa better placed than their nearest rivals, as shown below, despite recent form concerns.

Team Top-four chance (%)
Aston Villa 63.3
Manchester United 56.7
Liverpool 40.7
Chelsea 34.6

Aston Villa now look to regain belief before facing Lille in the Europa League last-16 first leg on March 12. Emery has two months to balance domestic and European demands, aiming to restore confidence, refine tactical structure and protect the club’s Premier League top-four position.
