Aston Villa Secure 2026 Europa League Title With 3-0 Win Over Freiburg

Aston Villa claimed the Europa League crown with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg, delivering the club’s first European trophy since 1982 and securing Unai Emery a fifth Europa League title, as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers settled the final at Tupras Stadyumu on 20 May 2026.

Emery extended an already outstanding record in continental competition, becoming the first coach to win the Europa League with three different clubs and adding this Villa triumph to earlier successes with Sevilla and Villarreal, while also moving to 108 wins in charge of Villa, more than at any previous club in Emery’s managerial career.

This success carried extra weight for Aston Villa, whose previous European glory came in the European Cup in 1982 against Bayern Munich, ending a 30-year wait for any major trophy and giving the Birmingham side a long-awaited return to prominence on the continental stage with a controlled display against a Freiburg team appearing in only the second major final in club history.

Freiburg tried to impose themselves early in the match, with Nicolas Hofler driving an effort just wide after Villa’s bright start, yet the Bundesliga side created little overall, finishing with only four attempts worth 0.22 expected goals as Aston Villa’s defence, led by Emiliano Martinez, restricted space and handled late pressure, including an offside effort from Johan Manzambi that Martinez still reacted to block.

Villa began aggressively at Tupras Stadyumu, immediately pushing Freiburg back as Morgan Rogers drew a sharp save from Noah Atubolu inside three minutes, setting the tone for the Premier League team’s front-foot approach, which continued as Aston Villa controlled territory and possession for long spells of the Europa League final.

The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute from a rehearsed short-corner move, when Rogers clipped a looping cross to the far edge of the penalty area, where Youri Tielemans arrived unmarked and drove a low volley into the bottom-left corner, halting Freiburg’s growing belief and giving Villa a deserved lead before half-time.

The advantage doubled right on the interval as John McGinn found Buendia on the edge of the area, and the Argentine created space before bending a precise shot into the top-left corner, leaving Atubolu motionless and sending Aston Villa into the dressing room with a 2-0 cushion in the Europa League showpiece.

Any remaining doubt disappeared in the 58th minute when Rogers stretched to divert Buendia’s driven cross inside the near post, making it 3-0 and confirming Villa’s superiority; Emery’s side then hunted a fourth goal, with Amadou Onana heading against the upright and Buendia later hitting the side-netting from close range as Freiburg continued to struggle.

Villa’s dominant performance showed clearly in the numbers, as the English club produced 17 shots worth 2.08 expected goals, compared with Freiburg’s four attempts and 0.22 xG, underlining how efficiently Emery’s team controlled the Europa League final both with and without the ball across the 90 minutes.

Emery had downplayed his reputation before kick-off, saying he no longer focused on the label of the "King of the Europa League", yet this fifth title strengthened that image, with the Spaniard now having won nine of the 11 major finals managed across his career, displaying consistent success in high-pressure knockout matches.

There were standout individual displays in attack, and the link between Rogers and Buendia had statistical significance, as the pair became only the second set of team-mates to both score and assist in a Europa League final, following Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud, who achieved the same feat for Chelsea against Emery’s Arsenal side during the 2018-19 season.

For Aston Villa and Emery, the night at Tupras Stadyumu brought together tactical control, clinical finishing and a record-setting coaching achievement, delivering a Europa League title that ended decades without European silverware for the club while further confirming Emery’s influence on Villa’s progress in continental competition.
