Atalanta Secures Historic 4-0 Victory Against Juventus To Boost Title Aspirations

Atalanta delivered a commanding performance at the Allianz Stadium, defeating Juventus 4-0. This victory solidified their third-place position in Serie A. It marked the first time Atalanta won an away game against Juventus by at least two goals in Serie A. Mateo Retegui opened the scoring with a penalty in the 26th minute after Weston McKennie handled the ball in the box.

Ademola Lookman played a crucial role in extending Atalanta's lead early in the second half. His shot was deflected into Marten de Roon's path, who capitalised on the opportunity to score. The visitors continued their impressive display with Davide Zappacosta netting a goal following Sead Kolasinac's clever backheel pass inside the area.

Lookman sealed Atalanta's victory with a goal in the 77th minute. His strike, deflecting off Lloyd Kelly, left Michele Di Gregorio unable to save it. This win brought Atalanta within three points of league leaders Inter, while Juventus remained fourth, trailing six points behind Gian Piero Gasperini's team.

Atalanta's recent form has reignited their slim hopes of clinching the title this season. Their success is attributed to a strong defence and an effective attack. Retegui and Lookman have been instrumental, contributing significantly to Atalanta's expected goals (xG) tally of 3.75.

Retegui has scored 14 out of his 22 league goals away from home this season. Since 1929-30, only Ciro Immobile has scored more away goals in a single Serie A season among Italian players, achieving this feat three times with 16 goals in 2017-18, 17 in 2019-20, and 15 in 2021-22.

This match marked another milestone for Atalanta as they scored at least four goals against Juventus for the first time in Serie A history. Additionally, they have maintained clean sheets for five consecutive matches for the fourth time in their top-flight history.

Their defensive record includes six consecutive clean sheets between December 1996 and January 1997, five between October and November 1985, and five between January and February 1967.
