Atalanta reignited their Serie A title hopes with a commanding 5-0 victory over Empoli, who are battling relegation. Ademola Lookman scored twice, responding to recent criticism from his coach Gian Piero Gasperini. This win places Atalanta just three points behind leaders Inter and two points off Napoli, with 12 matches left in the season.

Ademola Lookman showcased his skills by scoring twice, silencing critiques from his manager. Gasperini had previously criticised Lookman for missing a penalty during their Champions League loss to Club Brugge. Lookman's performance was crucial in maintaining Atalanta's momentum in the title race.

The match began with an own goal by Emmanuel Gyasi in the 27th minute after Davide Zappacosta's cross deflected off him into the net. Mateo Retegui doubled Atalanta's lead six minutes later. Before halftime, Lookman added a third goal by rounding goalkeeper Marco Silvestri and scoring effortlessly.

Mateo Retegui has been outstanding on the road, scoring seven goals in his last three away games. His tally includes a brace against Como and four goals against Verona. Only Mohamed Salah of Liverpool has more away goals in Europe's top five leagues this season than Retegui’s 13.

After halftime, Lookman scored again, receiving a pass from Marten de Roon and beating the offside trap to score past Silvestri. Zappacosta sealed the win with a goal in the 74th minute, leaving Empoli stuck at 18th place with 21 points, two points shy of safety.

Empoli's Struggles Against Atalanta

This victory marked Atalanta’s sixth consecutive Serie A win over Empoli, highlighting Empoli's ongoing difficulties against them. Despite the lopsided scoreline, Atalanta recorded an expected goals value of 2.42 compared to Empoli’s 1.06, indicating superior finishing quality contributed significantly to their impressive result.

Atalanta’s recent form has tightened the Serie A title race considerably. With both Napoli and Inter experiencing inconsistent results, Atalanta have capitalised on these opportunities to close the gap at the top of the table effectively.
