Atalanta Champions League Comeback Against Dortmund Will Shape Club History, Palladino Notes

Atalanta overturned a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, defeating Borussia Dortmund 4-1 in the return to seal a 4-3 aggregate victory. Raffaele Palladino praised the achievement as a historic moment for the club and for Italian football, emphasising the players' spirit and the support from staff and fans.

Atalanta produced a famous Champions League night, beating Borussia Dortmund 4-1 and overturning a 2-0 first-leg loss to claim a 4-3 aggregate victory. Head coach Raffaele Palladino described the performance as one of the greatest moments in the club’s history and a landmark for Italian football.

The Serie A side became the first team in the Champions League knockout rounds to recover from a two-goal first-leg deficit since Liverpool’s 2018-19 semi-final against Barcelona. Atalanta’s response in Bergamo transformed the tie and strengthened the club’s growing reputation in Europe.

Atalanta's historic UCL comeback over Dortmund

Palladino underlined the wider meaning of the win for club and country when speaking after the match. Palladino told Sky Sport Italia: "This is a match that will go down in history, not just here in Bergamo for all the Atalanta fans, but for Italian football as a whole."

Atalanta are now in a select group of Italian clubs to overturn such a deficit in the Champions League knockout phase. Juventus managed a similar response against Atletico Madrid in 2018-19, while Roma famously turned around a tie against Barcelona in the 2017-18 season.

Palladino highlighted the collective effort behind Atalanta’s Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund, praising players, staff and officials. The coach stressed the emotional impact of the night and the sense of shared achievement felt by everyone linked to the club.

"We achieved a comeback that will stay in the history books. We're so happy, I want to thank every single player, those who were on the field, on the bench, in the stands, my staff, the President Antonio Percassi, the directors, and all the fans. It was probably the best game I ever experienced in my coaching career, and it will remain in my mind forever. This club deserves this incredible satisfaction. I could see that positive energy in the eyes of my players, and the spirit was fantastic."

The defeat was also notable from Borussia Dortmund’s perspective, as the Bundesliga side had appeared in the 2024 Champions League final. Dortmund became only the second German club to exit a two-legged Champions League knockout tie after winning the first match by at least two goals, following Wolfsburg’s loss to Real Madrid in the 2015-16 quarter-finals.

Atalanta’s display combined intensity, belief and tactical discipline, allowing the Italian side to overturn Borussia Dortmund’s strong position and secure a historic Champions League progress. The result added another dramatic comeback to recent European history and confirmed Palladino’s team as a serious force in knockout competition.
