Atalanta's coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, has decided not to renew his contract with the Serie A team. However, he is considering extending his current agreement until 2026. Gasperini, who took charge in 2016, has significantly improved the club's performance, turning them into regular contenders in the Champions League. Under his leadership, Atalanta claimed the Europa League title last season by defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.
Gasperini's current contract runs until June 2025, with an option for a one-year extension. When asked about Atalanta's chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season, Gasperini remarked: "I have little time to do this, maybe it's the last one. Rightly so, as has been said there is a beginning and an end, we'll see at the end of the year whether to go for expiry or to stop, certainly there will be no continuity."

Atalanta have become known for their exciting style of play under Gasperini. Since he became coach, they have scored 641 league goals, second only to Inter Milan's 668 during that period. Despite their success on the field, Gasperini recently faced criticism after publicly reprimanding Ademola Lookman for missing a penalty against Club Brugge.
Lookman was instrumental in Atalanta's Europa League triumph last season and has scored 15 goals this season. However, after missing a penalty against Club Brugge, Gasperini criticised him because Charles De Ketelaere and Mateo Retegui were available to take it. Lookman responded on Instagram, expressing that Gasperini's comments were "deeply disrespectful and hurtful."
Gasperini later clarified his remarks: "It had an extraordinary impact... it was not meant to be an offensive sentence." He added that he wished Lookman had allowed De Ketelaere to take the penalty and emphasised that he always addresses issues in front of the entire team without involving the club management.
As Atalanta prepare to face Empoli on Sunday, they sit third in Serie A with 51 points from 25 matches. The team's attacking prowess continues to make them one of Italy's most entertaining sides under Gasperini's guidance. The future remains uncertain for both Gasperini and Atalanta as they approach the end of another successful season together.
