Atalanta Seeks To Hold Off Lazio And Napoli In Serie A Title Race

Atalanta leads Serie A but faces a challenge from Lazio. With key players scoring heavily, they aim to secure their position against rivals Napoli and Inter.

Atalanta currently lead the Serie A standings, but their position is at risk as they prepare to face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. Gian Piero Gasperini's squad has been impressive, achieving a club record of 11 consecutive league victories. This streak has propelled them two points ahead of Napoli in second place. Their success this year includes winning their first trophy since 1963 by defeating Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last May.

Inter Milan, playing earlier on Saturday, have a chance to catch up with Atalanta if they defeat Cagliari. They have a game in hand and could match Atalanta's points tally. Inter have spent the most time leading in Serie A this season, with 683 minutes. They also boast the most wins (26 out of 37), goals scored (89), and fewest losses (two) and goals conceded (29) in 2024.

Atalanta Faces Lazio in Serie A Clash

Lazio have made history by winning 17 of their first 24 games across all competitions for the first time since 1929-30. Marco Baroni's team has delivered notable performances, including consecutive victories over Napoli when they were top of the table in both the Coppa Italia and Serie A. Lazio have won their last two matches against teams leading Serie A at matchday start, matching their previous record against such opponents.

Nerazzurri's strong performance this season makes them a formidable contender for the title. Meanwhile, Napoli aims to maintain their momentum after two consecutive wins following a loss to Lazio. Antonio Conte's side knows they must beat Venezia to stay competitive at the top of the table.

Atalanta's remarkable start this season is largely due to their potent attack. They are the only team among Europe's top five leagues with three players scoring at least ten goals each: Charles De Ketelaere (10), Ademola Lookman (12), and Mateo Retegui (14). De Ketelaere leads Serie A players in all competitions for 2024 with 36 contributions (20 goals and 16 assists).

Juventus remain unbeaten in Serie A but sit sixth due to ten draws, nine points from the top spot. They face a challenging match against fifth-placed Fiorentina on Sunday. Meanwhile, Milan are eighth and will host Roma on Sunday.

If Atalanta falters against Lazio on Saturday, both Napoli and Inter are poised to capitalise with matches against relegation-threatened teams. Napoli has improved significantly from last season but needs consistency at home after losing two of their last three home games.
