Atalanta's hopes for a Serie A title have diminished after recent defeats, according to Gian Piero Gasperini. Their latest loss was a 1-0 defeat to Fiorentina, with Moise Kean scoring the decisive goal. This marked their second consecutive league loss, following a 2-0 home defeat to Inter. Despite these setbacks, Gasperini believes the real blow to their title dreams came against Inter.
Currently sitting third in Serie A, Atalanta holds a slim three-point lead over fifth-placed Juventus. Teams like Bologna, Roma, Lazio, and Fiorentina are also vying for a Champions League spot. Gasperini noted that they have eight games left and will play five at home. He emphasised the importance of upcoming matches against Lazio and Bologna.

Atalanta's struggle was evident as they failed to register a single shot on target against Fiorentina. This was the first time since February 2023 that they did not manage a shot on goal in Serie A. "Today, we didn't shoot on goal," Gasperini remarked, acknowledging missed opportunities despite favourable conditions.
Assistant manager Tullio Gritti took charge during the match due to Gasperini's suspension from a red card incident against Inter. Despite having more possession in the second half, Atalanta struggled to create chances. Gritti made changes upfront but couldn't find the right combination.
Mateo Retegui started despite recently withdrawing from international duty due to a thigh injury. He was substituted after 55 minutes alongside Ademola Lookman. "Retegui was back... but making him play 90 minutes was a risk," Gasperini explained. Lookman returned on Friday and is known for his speed and creativity in attack.
Gasperini highlighted that other players prefer receiving the ball directly rather than creating movement themselves. Attempts were made with Daniel Maldini, Lazar Samardzic, Marco Brescianini, and Juan Cuadrado but lacked pace upfront.
Atalanta has never won Italy's top flight title before and faces tough competition ahead. They must strengthen their performance if they hope to secure a Champions League spot amidst fierce competition from other teams aiming for similar goals this season.
