Atalanta Faces Uphill Battle Following Last-Minute Loss To Club Brugge In Champions League Playoff

Gian Piero Gasperini expresses concern over Atalanta's prospects after a late penalty led to a loss against Club Brugge. The team must win by two goals in the return leg to advance.

Atalanta's manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, expressed concerns about their upcoming Champions League playoff second leg against Club Brugge. After a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday, Gasperini acknowledged the challenge of overturning the result. Mario Pasalic had equalised for Atalanta before halftime, but a controversial penalty awarded to Brugge in stoppage time sealed their fate.

The penalty decision came after Isak Hein's hand brushed Gustaf Nilsson's face, causing the Swedish striker to fall. This marked Atalanta's first European away defeat in 15 matches and their first knockout loss since March 2021. Gasperini admitted that winning by two goals against Brugge would be tough, requiring them to take more risks.

Atalanta's Challenge After Brugge Defeat

Gasperini reflected on the match, noting their poor start but improvement as the game progressed. Despite creating significant chances in the second half, Atalanta couldn't capitalise and ultimately lost. Nilsson's penalty was notable as it was the first 90th-minute winning spot-kick by a substitute in the Champions League since Eric Choupo-Moting's for Schalke in 2014.

After the game, Gasperini criticised modern football's direction, stating, "It's a tragedy that we are infecting football [like that]." He lamented how players now dive to win fouls and penalties. Atalanta midfielder Charles De Ketelaere shared his disappointment over the late penalty decision, saying no one would agree it was justified.

De Ketelaere also expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received at his former club Brugge but admitted losing at the last minute was painful. Meanwhile, teammate Marten De Roon emphasised focusing on improving performance for the return leg rather than dwelling on the penalty incident.

Focus on Performance Improvement

De Roon acknowledged that discussing the penalty was futile and stressed analysing their performance instead. He noted they played better in the second half but appeared tired overall. The team must address these issues to advance in the competition.

As Atalanta prepares for their home match against Brugge, they face an uphill battle needing a two-goal victory to progress. The team will need to strategise effectively and improve their performance to overcome this challenge and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
