Athletic Bilbao Triumphs Over Rangers 2-0 In Europa League Quarter-Finals

Athletic Bilbao defeated Rangers 2-0 at San Mames, with goals from Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams securing their place in the Europa League semi-finals.

Athletic Bilbao secured a spot in the Europa League semi-finals by defeating Rangers 2-0 at San Mames. Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams scored the goals that sealed the victory. The first leg at Ibrox ended in a draw, but Sancet's penalty just before half-time gave Bilbao the lead. Williams then ensured their win with a late header.

Rangers, under interim manager Barry Ferguson, saw their season hopes dashed as they failed to progress. Their only chance of redemption was an unlikely Europa League victory. Despite some promising moments, including Nico Raskin hitting the post, they couldn't find the net. Hamza Igamane missed a late chance to score a consolation goal.

Athletic Bilbao Beats Rangers in Europa League

Sancet had an early opportunity blocked by Ridvan Yilmaz, while Alex Berenguer narrowly missed another chance for Bilbao. Maroan Sannadi's skill set up Williams for a shot that went wide, but Rangers' luck ran out when John Souttar fouled Sannadi in the box. Sancet converted the resulting penalty with precision.

This defeat marked Rangers' first elimination at this stage of a European competition since 1987-88 against FCSB. Captain James Tavernier made his 63rd European appearance for Rangers, surpassing John Greig but trailing Allan McGregor's record of 78 appearances. However, it was not a memorable night for him or his team.

In contrast, Athletic Bilbao reached their first major European semi-final since 2011-12 under Marcelo Bielsa. This achievement highlights their progress in European competitions after several years.

Rangers are now on their worst run in six years, failing to win four consecutive matches across all competitions (two losses and two draws). Their last similar streak occurred under Steven Gerrard in 2019.

Athletic Bilbao's performance was dominant from the start as they pressured Rangers early on. Despite missing some initial chances, they capitalised on key moments to secure their place in the next round of the competition.

The match highlighted Athletic's resilience and ability to seize opportunities when presented. Their journey continues as they aim for further success in this year's Europa League campaign.
