Jan Oblak Criticises Atletico Madrid's Pitiful Performance Following Heavy Loss To Benfica

After a dismal 4-0 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League, Jan Oblak condemned Atletico Madrid's performance as pitiful. Despite Diego Simeone finding positives, Oblak stated there was nothing good to say about the match.

Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak expressed disappointment following their 4-0 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League. This result marked Atletico's worst loss against a Portuguese team in the competition. Benfica equalled their largest home win in the Champions League, matching their 5-1 victory over Club Brugge in March 2023. Atletico managed only four shots without hitting the target, while Benfica had 19 shots and an expected goals (xG) of 4.46.

Oblak, who made six crucial saves to prevent a larger defeat, was critical of Atletico's performance in Lisbon. "It's pitiful to lose like this, it's not a good image to give and there's not much more to say. We weren't good today, to say the least," Oblak told Movistar Plus. He emphasised that such performances are unacceptable and that they must move forward after this setback.

Oblak Slams Atletico's Performance After Loss

Diego Simeone acknowledged Atletico's poor performance but remained optimistic about future improvements. "I always like to think positively and I think it's a good opportunity to keep improving," Simeone told Movistar Plus. He admitted that they didn't play as expected and emphasised the need for acceptance and growth from this experience.

Simeone noted that despite their efforts, Atletico lacked effectiveness during substitutions which failed to provide the usual impact. He stressed that there was no shortage of effort or desire but admitted that playing poorly exposes teams to such losses. Simeone highlighted that they had been performing well recently but faced an unexpected setback.

The coach urged his team to learn from this experience and focus on recovering energy for their upcoming LaLiga match against Real Sociedad on Sunday. The emphasis was on accepting bad nights as part of football and using them as learning opportunities for future games.

This defeat serves as a reminder for Atletico Madrid of the challenges they face in maintaining consistency at high levels of competition. As they prepare for their next match, both players and management will aim to address these issues and improve their performance on the field.
