Atletico Madrid On The Right Track After Defeat To Bodo Glimt In Champions League

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid remain on the right track after a 2-1 home defeat to Bodo/Glimt, which ended their hopes of an automatic last-16 place and pushed them into the play-off route. The boss cites a busy fixture list and calls for continued opportunity creation and confidence-building for the squad.

Diego Simeone stated that Atletico Madrid remain on course, even after a 2-1 home defeat to Bodo/Glimt that stopped automatic progress to the Champions League last 16 and confirmed a play-off tie against Club Brugge or Galatasaray from 14th place in the league phase table.

The LaLiga club went ahead through Alexander Sorloth, but Bodo/Glimt replied with goals from Fredrik Sjovold and Kasper Hogh either side of half-time, while Sorloth also entered the record books as the first Norwegian to score a European Cup or Champions League goal against a Norwegian opponent.

Atletico on track after Bodo defeat

Results across the final two league phase rounds proved decisive for Atletico Madrid, as a 1-1 draw with Galatasaray on MD7 and the loss to Bodo/Glimt yielded only one point, which meant the Spanish side could not avoid the Champions League play-off route despite earlier momentum in the campaign.

There was another unwanted statistical note for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, as this was only the second time in eight campaigns that Atleti scored first in a home match and still lost, the previous occasion being a 1-3 defeat to Lille in October 2024 after also taking the lead.

Simeone linked some of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League inconsistency to a congested schedule and physical demands on the squad before explaining the approach he wants from the players: "The only solution is to keep creating opportunities, give the players confidence, and encourage them to keep giving their all, said Simeone."

Simeone’s comments followed a demanding run of fixtures for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and domestic competition, and the club also highlighted the latest setback on social channels, sharing the Bodo/Glimt result with supporters while attention quickly turned towards preparation for the play-off tie.

"We're on the right track and we have to stay the course because important things are coming. Honestly, I was more disappointed against Galatasaray because we played a fantastic match and deserved to win. We had played just three days ago and the players gave their all; I have no complaints. With humility and confidence in what we do, the results will come."

Atletico Madrid now move from the Champions League league phase into a high-pressure play-off, carrying mixed recent form but also several positive metrics, including their ability to score first and Sorloth’s historic goal, while Simeone continues to stress belief, hard work and calm amid a demanding calendar.
