Diego Simeone celebrated Atletico Madrid’s progress with clear emotion after a 4-1 win over Club Brugge secured a 7-4 aggregate victory and a place in the Champions League last 16, with Alexander Sorloth’s hat-trick driving a performance that showed how this squad has reshaped itself following a major rebuild across the last two transfer windows.
The Norwegian forward is now on 15 goals in all competitions this season, more than any other Atletico player, and Sorloth also became only the second player to score a Champions League hat-trick for Atletico Madrid, matching Mario Mandzukic’s feat against Olympiacos in November 2014 while doubling personal scoring output in the competition against familiar opposition.

Atletico Madrid have now reached the Champions League round of 16 on 11 occasions since the 2013-14 season, a level of regular qualification bettered in that period only by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, both on 13, and by Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who have each advanced to this stage 12 times.
This tie against Club Brugge also brought a new attacking high for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, as the seven goals across the two legs represented their largest haul in any knockout confrontation in UEFA’s main club competition, beating the previous record of five when Simeone’s side overcame AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate during the 2013-14 last-16 campaign.
The European progress comes during a mixed domestic season, with Atletico Madrid currently sitting 13 points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona, while the team also finished 14th in the league phase of this Champions League campaign, underlining how performances have swung between strong attacking displays and periods of inconsistency across different competitions.
Simeone has had to guide Atletico Madrid through a substantial squad overhaul, as 11 new players arrived last summer and the reshaping continued last month when Ademola Lookman, Rodrigo Mendoza and Obed Vargas joined, leaving the coach to rebuild on the training ground while maintaining expectations in both LaLiga and the Champions League knockouts.
Sorloth’s first goal came in the 23rd minute, when the striker held off Brandon Mechele to collect Jan Oblak’s long kick before shooting with the left foot past Simon Mignolet, whose attempted save failed to keep the ball out, and that opener set the tone for the rest of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League performance at the Estadio Metropolitano.
The hat-trick means Sorloth has now scored as many Champions League goals against Club Brugge as across his other 20 appearances in the competition combined, with three in each case, and this sudden surge in European output strengthens Simeone’s options in attack as Atletico balance domestic demands with their latest deep Champions League run.
Reflecting on the evolution of Atletico Madrid, Simeone stressed how much effort has gone into shaping this new-look group. "I'm very happy, there's a lot of hard work behind these results, which are starting to be more positive than negative," Simeone said. "Many new players joined us last season and many more this season, so reinventing ourselves is never easy. And when you see the willingness and conviction of the substitutes when they come on, that moves me. I'm a football man, and when I see that commitment to the idea, to what we're looking for, I feel very identified with it."
Sorloth explained why the opening goal carried extra meaning beyond the scoreboard. "It was really important to get the first goal. I especially liked the goal because of my idol, Didier Drogba, who used to score many goals like that," Sorloth said. "It reminded me of one of his goals, which makes it even more special for me.We just have to continue. We have to take the confidence we get from these types of games and build on it. Of course, we need to be more stable defensively, to not concede chances against offensive teams, and we have to stay hungry."
Attention also turned to Antoine Griezmann, who has reportedly attracted interest from MLS club Orlando City, with the forward having played 481 matches for Atletico across two spells, scoring 210 goals and supplying 89 assists, a level of output that leaves any future decision significant for both player and club during this Champions League season.
Simeone chose careful words when asked about Griezmann’s plans. "I'm not going to speak for him. I love him very much. I have already told him what I think," Simeone said. "That he always chooses the best he wants. He is in a place where he deserves to choose what he wants to do."
Between Sorloth’s finishing, Simeone’s reshaped squad and the uncertainty around Griezmann’s next move, Atletico Madrid approach the Champions League last 16 with renewed belief, yet also with clear awareness of defensive issues and domestic gaps, as the club tries to extend another deep European campaign while handling a season full of shifts on and off the pitch.
