Atletico Madrid Secures Champions League Last 16 Spot With 4-1 Victory Over Salzburg

Antoine Griezmann's two goals secured Atletico Madrid's advancement to the Champions League last 16 with a 4-1 victory over RB Salzburg. This win placed them fifth in the 36-team standings. Griezmann's performance has set up a potential next-round clash against Celtic, Manchester City, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich following Wednesday's results.

Atletico Madrid wasted no time at the Red Bull Arena, taking just five minutes to score. Giuliano Simeone netted his first Champions League goal under the watchful eyes of his father and manager. Eight minutes later, Simeone played a crucial role again by delivering a cross that Antoine Griezmann converted past Salzburg captain Alexander Schlager.

The French striker completed his brace in first-half stoppage time, putting Atletico firmly in control with 45 minutes remaining. Marcos Llorente added another goal just after the hour mark, finishing off a swift counter-attack initiated by Rodrigo De Paul. Despite this dominant display, Salzburg managed to score late on when Adam Daghim struck a left-footed volley into the bottom corner.

Under Diego Simeone's leadership, Atletico Madrid has turned their home ground into a stronghold across all competitions. However, they have now extended that dominance to away games in Europe. They have achieved three consecutive away wins in the European Cup/Champions League for the first time since the 1973-74 season.

This victory marked only the fifth occasion they scored four or more goals in an away match and the second time this season after their 6-0 win against Sparta Prague in November. Griezmann was instrumental in this triumph, scoring his second brace away from home for Atletico since September 2015 against Galatasaray.

Griezmann has now scored more braces than any other player who hasn't achieved a hat-trick in the competition, with nine braces to his name. Meanwhile, Salzburg has been eliminated at the group stage in six of their seven Champions League appearances, except for reaching the last 16 during the 2021-22 season.

Atletico Madrid's recent success highlights their ability to perform strongly both at home and away. Their impressive form continues to build momentum as they advance further into the tournament.
