Julian Alvarez has transferred from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid in a deal valued at up to £95 million (€81.5 million). The Spanish club will pay an initial £75 million (€64.5 million) with an additional £20 million (€17 million) in potential add-ons.
The 24-year-old forward, who recently helped Argentina win the Copa America and represented his country at the Paris Olympics, played 54 matches across all competitions for City last season. This was more than any other player, although 15 of those appearances were as a substitute.

During his time with Manchester City, Alvarez made 103 appearances over two seasons since joining from River Plate in 2022. He scored 19 goals last season, surpassing his expected goals (xG) of 17.5, and provided 13 assists, second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s 17 assists.
Alvarez has won numerous titles with City, including two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Super Cup, and the Club World Cup. His departure marks a club-record sale for Manchester City.
Atletico Madrid had already bolstered their attack by signing Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal following the departures of Alvaro Morata and Memphis Depay. They have also agreed on a deal to acquire midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea as Diego Simeone aims to strengthen his squad for the upcoming season.
Additionally, Atletico is reportedly negotiating with Chelsea over a potential transfer for Joao Felix after Samu Omorodion's proposed move to Stamford Bridge fell through.
Pep Guardiola confirmed that Alvarez sought a new challenge at Atletico Madrid and has signed a six-year contract with the Spanish club. "Julian wanted to test himself with a new challenge," Guardiola stated.
Alvarez is now among an elite group of players who have scored in both Copa America and World Cup semi-finals, joining Lionel Messi, Romario, and Diego Forlan.
This significant transfer highlights Atletico Madrid's intent to compete at the highest level next season while providing Alvarez with a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents in La Liga.
