Atletico Madrid Transfers: Simeone Stays Calm Ahead Of Window Closing

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid stay relaxed over transfer business while preparing for a decisive Champions League fixture against Bodo/Glimt. Despite several departures and no signings so far in January, Simeone says the priority is finishing the window stronger and keeping focus on results in LaLiga and Europe.

The head coach acknowledges Atletico Madrid need reinforcements, yet stresses there is no internal conflict about the quiet transfer window. Sporting director Mateu Alemany recently warned that recruitment would happen only for something exceptional, but Simeone maintains confidence that suitable deals can still be completed before the deadline on Monday.

Atletico Madrid have already seen Javi Galan, Carlos Martin, Conor Gallagher and Giacomo Raspadori leave during this window, while no arrivals have been confirmed. Simeone admitted after the 3-0 LaLiga win over Mallorca that new faces are needed, but emphasised that squad strength on 2 February matters more than timing.

Simeone also pushed back against talk of tension with Alemany regarding the lack of signings. "There's zero [animosity], Simeone told reporters on the eve of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Bodo/Glimt. I'm calm where I am. Anything can happen until the very last day, as I've been saying for 14 years. There can be arrivals and departures. What matters is that when the transfer window closes, Atletico comes out stronger."

Domestic form offers mixed signals for Atletico Madrid. Simeone's side have won five and drawn one of the last six LaLiga matches, yet still trail Real Madrid by seven points and Barcelona by eight. The gap means the Champions League takes on extra weight as another route to a successful season.

Atletico Madrid sit 12th ahead of the final round of the Champions League league phase after a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray last week. They are one of eight clubs on 13 points. A top-eight finish, and automatic passage to the last 16, remains possible but depends on other results.

The Norwegian champions arrive in Madrid after a 4-1 victory over Manchester City, a result that underlines the threat for Atletico Madrid. Simeone warned against underestimating Bodo/Glimt. "Bodo/Glimt have had some very difficult matches and have played very well away from home, Simeone said. They competed very well in Dortmund and they beat City. The team plays very well, with good transitions. We are going to try to win the match from a place of humility and hard work."

Simeone highlighted the intensity across the Champions League league phase, with every club still chasing something meaningful on the final matchday. "The Champions League is an occasionas we are seeing on this final matchday, because the teams at the bottom want to move up and those at the top want to qualify for the round of 16. Other results have to go our way [for a top-eight finish], but we have to get a good result first."

As the transfer window edges towards Monday's closure and the Champions League league phase reaches its final round, Simeone balances squad concerns with short-term targets. Atletico Madrid seek a positive result against Bodo/Glimt while hoping smart late business and favourable European outcomes leave the team better placed for the rest of the season.
