Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez's penalty kick in the Champions League Round of 16 2nd leg match against Real Madrid was controversially ruled out on Wednesday (March 12), much to the dismay of their faithful.
The Argentine was the second in line for Atletico in the penalty shootout, and he found the net with his kick, but only to be ruled out moments later as VAR intervened.

Julian Alvarez scored the goal as he came for the spot kick. When he took the kick, the Argentine slipped but found the roof of the net. Within seconds, before the Real Madrid player could take the next kick, the referee intervened him due to a VAR check. After the check was complete, the goal was ruled out.
When Julian Alvarez slipped while taking his shot, the Argentina player managed a double kick. Alvarez's right leg touched the ball first and then it just kissed his slipping left boot before looping into the net.
When it comes to penalty kicks during a tie-breaker, a player has to score by a single contact of the ball with his feet, and because of the double contact, Alvarez's goal was ruled out.
Real Madrid managed to win the Round of 16 match 4-2 in penalties as Antonio Rudiger scored the winning spot kick for Los Blancos.
The Atletico Madrid contingent was not happy with the decision at all. It was yet another unfortunate ending to a Champions League tie for Atletico Madrid against their rivals. Real Madrid, by the way, have now managed to escape again by the barest of margins and they will be up against Arsenal in the quarterfinals, who blew away PSV Eindhoven 9-3 in aggregate across two matches.
