Kompany Argues That Attacking Approach Is Key Against PSG In Champions League Semi-final

Vincent Kompany insists Bayern Munich must attack Paris Saint-Germain without fear, despite a 5-4 defeat in a dramatic Champions League semi-final first leg. The head coach watched from the stands due to a touchline ban but argued that front-foot football remains Bayern Munich’s best chance of overturning the tie in Munich on 28 April 2026.

The nine-goal contest at Parc des Princes is already being discussed as one of the wildest Champions League semi-final nights. PSG made full use of their chances and take a narrow advantage to Germany, yet Bayern Munich’s response from 5-2 down, plus strong expected goals data, offered Kompany clear belief for the return leg.

Kompany: attack is key vs PSG

Kompany explained that his tactical view against PSG is shaped by the small margin for error at this level. "What do you want? I think youve seen a lot of good, intense defending today, it'sjust the margins are so, so little, and you only have two ways, he told Amazon Prime. The first one is to go full [attack], or the second one is to retreat fully. The in-between doesn'twork against [PSG's] level of player, and it doesn'twork against our level of player."

From a statistical angle, Bayern Munich actually created higher quality chances than the Champions League holders. The visitors posted 2.51 expected goals compared with PSG’s 1.91. Yet every one of PSG’s five efforts on target ended in the net, underlining Kompany’s point about tiny margins deciding major European nights.

The 5-4 scoreline set several historical markers for the Champions League and European Cup. It produced the most goals in any Champions League semi-final match. Including earlier European Cup seasons, it equals the highest-scoring last-four fixture, matching Rangers’ 6-3 home defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1959-60 campaign.

This was also the first European semi-final in any competition where both teams scored at least four goals. Within Champions League knockout history, only one other tie saw a similar total for both sides, Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool in the 2008-09 quarter-finals. Bayern Munich, however, conceded five in a match for the first time since a 5-1 league loss at Eintracht Frankfurt in December 2023.

That five-goal concession had not happened for Bayern Munich in Europe since the 1994-95 Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax, which finished 5-2 to the Dutch side. Current form shows another unusual trend. Bayern Munich have now let in at least three goals in back-to-back European Cup or Champions League fixtures for the first time since a sequence of three games in October and November 1973.

Champions League semi-final: Bayern Munich expectation for PSG second leg

Despite the defensive issues, that 1973 run ended with Bayern Munich lifting the European Cup for the first time, a detail that offers historical encouragement. Kompany also refused to think the tie was finished at 5-2. Quick responses from Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz restored hope and highlighted Bayern Munich’s attacking depth.

Kompany underlined that view by focusing on the volume of chances created at Parc des Princes. "It's one thing to look at the goals concedednormally, concedefive goals in a Champions League semi-final, away from home, you're outbut if you look at the chances we created, we could have scored more," Kompany said, pointing to several missed opportunities during both halves.

The Bayern Munich head coach emphasised that belief came from performance levels rather than the narrow scoreline. "If you've got nothing in the game, it's hard to make a case to say you could turn it around, but if you're as dangerous as we were during this game, then I feel like it'sjust about getting your head back in the game and trying to put the chances away."

Attention now turns to the Allianz Arena, where Bayern Munich aim to use home support against PSG. Kompany described what the squad expects from the second leg atmosphere. "More. Even more. We're at home. We'll have 75,000 people in that stadium. The city will live it for an entire week. We don't just want noisewe want a mass in the stadium, that weight to be there, and we need it. Then, it's a place where anything can happen. It'snot a ground that is shy of successful moments for this team."

The semi-final now stands finely balanced, with PSG holding a one-goal advantage and Bayern Munich relying on their attacking strength. The first leg’s record-breaking scoreline, unusual defensive numbers and Kompany’s clear belief in an aggressive approach ensure the second leg in Munich carries major intrigue for Champions League followers across Europe and the Middle East.
