Australia hope to turn Sydney to their fortress

With Syria playing all their home matches at Malaysia due to the political unrest in the country, Kuala Lumpur will host the first leg.

Bengaluru, September 7: The Socceroos will hope to turn Sydney's Olympic Stadium (ANZ Stadium) into their fortress after it was confirmed as the venue for the second leg of the World Cup play-off tie against Syria on October 10.

The decision to allot the match to Sydney was announced by Football Federation Australia Chief Executive David Gallop at the ANZ Stadium today (September 7).

With Syria playing all their home matches at Malaysia due to the political unrest in the country, a Malaya city will host the first leg on October 5.

Australia failed to qualify automatically for the 2018 World Cup to be held in Russia as they could only sneak a 2-1 win over Thailand in their final match in Melbourne on Tuesday. They required a 3-0 win.

And then to make matters more worse, Saudi Arabia beat Group B winners Japan 1-0 in Jeddah later to clinch the second automatic spot, consigning Australia to a tricky third-place play-off tie against Syria.

The winner then faces the fourth-placed side from the North and Central America CONCACAF region, which is currently the United States with two matches remaining, in a two-legged play-off in November.

If Ange Postecoglou's side make it that far, Sydney's Olympic Stadium will once again host Australia's home match.

The Socceroos have figured in the last three World Cups and Gallop hopes they can make it this time as well.

"We are all disappointed that we didn't achieve direct qualification from our group but we're confident we can still make it to Russia," said Gallop.

"It's just a longer, harder road but we are focused on supporting Ange, his support staff and the playing group.

"We are experienced in the challenges of being on the road for away games but being at home brings our players in from the four corners of the globe and we expect it to be a big occasion for the football family and the nation."
