Australia Head Coach Popovic Praises Special Young Side After World Cup Opener Victory

Australia stunned Turkiye with a 2-0 victory in Group D, securing a powerful start to this World Cup campaign. Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe in each half decided the contest. The result moved Australia level on points with the next opponents, the United States.

The success also ended a long wait for Australia. This is only the second time the team has won an opening World Cup match, and the first since 2006. It is also just the fifth occasion that Australia has scored at least two goals in a World Cup game.

Popovic praises special young Australia side

Australia produced the win despite having only 28.3% possession, the lowest share in any match in the nation’s World Cup history. It is also the lowest figure recorded by any side at the 2026 World Cup so far. Australia focused on direct attacks and punished Turkiye with efficient finishing.

Patrick Beach played a central role in this approach. The goalkeeper made eight saves, more than any other debutant goalkeeper at a World Cup since Rustu Recber, who made nine for Turkiye against Brazil in 2002. Beach’s interventions repeatedly denied Turkiye during long periods of pressure.

Head coach Tony Popovic highlighted the emotional value of the result for Australia’s youthful squad and backroom team. Popovic underlined that the performance could shape belief for the rest of the tournament, especially after such a demanding opening test against strong European opposition in Group D.

"Proud. Proud to be here as head coach, Popovic said when asked how he felt. Proud to experience this and put a smile on these people's faces, who have travelled so far to support us. Happy for a wonderful group of young men. At the moment, just proudproud of the staff for the work they put in. Some good decisions, they were outstanding. It was quite special. You see the young boys combining to score a goal, and you can't underestimate what this will do for their confidence and belief. Emotionally, it will take a lot out of the players this game, so we've got to get back and recover well and focus on the USA."

Australia vs Turkiye: wasteful Turkiye fall short in Group D clash

While Australia finished efficiently, Turkiye struggled badly in front of goal. The team had 30 attempts, yet did not score. That total is the highest for a World Cup side without a goal since Portugal recorded 31 shots against England in 2006, also unsuccessfully.

Turkiye’s failure was striking when compared with past form against Asian Football Confederation opponents. Before this match, Turkiye averaged 3.5 goals across four World Cup meetings with AFC teams. This is only the second time Turkiye has failed to score in a World Cup fixture.

Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler carried much of Turkiye’s attacking threat. Guler produced eight of the 30 shots, the most by any player in a single match at this World Cup so far. Yet Turkiye’s total expected goals value reached only 1.4, showing many efforts were from low-quality positions.

Head coach Vincenzo Montella pointed to both Australia’s defensive shape and Turkiye’s own finishing as key factors. Montella stressed that Group D still offers enough opportunities to respond in the remaining two matches and that confidence must remain intact despite this setback.

"We created so many chances, but we couldn't score. That's football, he said. They defended very well; it was difficult to get into the box. They did well at scoring on the counter-attack, which is their best weapon. All is not lost; there are still two games to play, and I'm confident. We're disappointed with the result, but there's time to move on; we have to stay positive."

This result leaves Australia in a strong early position in Group D, matched on points with the United States before their meeting. Turkiye faces increased pressure after failing to convert dominance into goals. Both sides now turn focus toward recovery, analysis, and tactical adjustments for crucial upcoming fixtures.
