Austria Algeria World Cup 3-3 Draw Sees Kalajdzic's Late Equaliser Secure Knockout Qualification

Sasa Kalajdzic struck a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser as Austria and Algeria drew 3-3 in their final World Cup Group J match, a result that sent both nations into the last 32. The late twist denied Riyad Mahrez a decisive winner and confirmed Austria as group runners-up, with Algeria progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.

The draw shapes the knockout bracket in a clear way. Austria now face European champions Spain in the Round of 32, while Algeria meet Switzerland after advancing through the ranking of third-placed sides. Both teams leave Kansas with mixed feelings, balancing defensive concerns with strong attacking displays across a frantic contest.

Austria Algeria World Cup 3-3 Kalajdzic late equaliser

Mahrez seemed to have completed Algeria’s comeback in the third minute of added time. The former Manchester City forward collected the ball inside the penalty area and drilled a low finish into the bottom-right corner, sparking early celebrations on the Algerian bench. However, Kalajdzic reacted late in stoppage time, turning in from close range to secure the point.

Earlier, the second half swung repeatedly. Austria moved 3-2 ahead on 55 minutes when Konrad Laimer laid the ball off at the edge of the penalty area and Marcel Sabitzer bent a precise shot into the top-right corner. The advantage vanished after only five minutes as Houssem Aouar surged down the left and squared for Mahrez, who finished at the back post.

The match carried major historical notes for several players. Marko Arnautovic, who opened the scoring, started at 37 years and 70 days, making Arnautovic the oldest Austrian to begin a World Cup fixture. That mark overtook Michael Konsel, who was 36 years and 109 days when starting against Italy at the 1998 tournament.

Rafik Belghali also wrote a new line in Algeria’s World Cup history. Belghali scored at 24 years and 20 days, becoming Algeria’s youngest World Cup scorer since the nation’s first finals match in 1982, when Rabah Madjer and Lakdhar Belloumi, aged 23 years 183 days and 23 years 169 days respectively, both netted against West Germany.

Sabitzer’s curling strike added to a specific trend. The midfielder has now scored nine goals for Austria from outside the penalty area since 2019, more than double the total of any Austrian team-mate in that period. Mahrez’s brace also carried weight; at 35, Mahrez finally registered a first World Cup goal, then added another in added time.

Those two goals meant Mahrez became the first Algerian to score at a World Cup aged 32 or older and the second Algerian to hit multiple goals in a single World Cup game. The only previous player to achieve that feat was Salah Assad, who struck twice against Chile in 1982, underlining Mahrez’s importance to this current squad.

World Cup Group J statistics from a classic in Kansas

The match in Kansas opened slowly before the contest changed after the first hydration break. Austria had threatened early when Xaver Schlager fired over the bar in the eighth minute, which was the team’s first attempt inside the opening 10 minutes of any match at this World Cup. Austria then needed patience before finding a route ahead.

On 28 minutes, David Alaba lifted a measured pass over the Algeria defence. Arnautovic raced through and poked past Oussama Benbot for his second goal of the 2026 World Cup. Arnautovic soon went close again, dragging a shot just wide of the left upright, before Fares Chaibi replied with a powerful long-range attempt that crashed against the post.

Algeria grew into the contest as half-time approached. Belghali first dragged one effort past the left-hand upright but stayed alert. Deep in first-half stoppage time, Mahrez kept the ball alive on the flank and Belghali cut inside before lashing a rising strike into the roof of the net, bringing Algeria level at 1-1 at the interval.

The overall attacking numbers reflected an open, balanced game between the two World Cup Group J sides. Algeria attempted 12 shots, with five efforts on target and an expected goals figure of 1.62. Austria registered 10 shots, three on target, producing an overall expected goals value of 1.44 according to post-match data analysis.

The wider tournament picture also featured in the post-match coverage.

Across a fluctuating contest in Kansas, Austria and Algeria produced six goals, several records and a series of turning points. Austria now prepare for a demanding tie with Spain, while Algeria focus on Switzerland after advancing from World Cup Group J, both teams encouraged by attacking strengths yet aware of defensive gaps shown in this dramatic draw.
