Austria And Switzerland Achieve World Cup Qualification With Key Draws In Matches

Austria and Switzerland have secured their spots for the 2026 World Cup following crucial draws against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. Austria's comeback and Switzerland's resilience highlight their successful campaigns.

Austria managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, ensuring their spot in the 2026 World Cup. Haris Tabakovic's early goal in the 12th minute had put Bosnia-Herzegovina ahead, threatening Austria's position at the top of Group H. However, Austria's persistence paid off when Michael Gregoritsch capitalised on a rebound to score in the 77th minute.

Switzerland topped Group B after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Kosovo. Ruben Vargas scored shortly after halftime, but Florent Muslija equalised with a spectacular goal in the 74th minute. This result keeps Kosovo's hopes alive for their first World Cup appearance as they move into the play-offs.

Austria and Switzerland Qualify for World Cup

In another Group B match, Sweden ended their qualifying campaign at the bottom despite earning a point against Slovenia. Timi Max Elsnik gave Slovenia the lead just past the hour mark. However, Sweden's Gustav Lundgren, making his debut, equalised three minutes from time to halt Sweden's four-game losing streak.

The match between Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovina saw some dramatic moments. Konrad Laimer thought he had equalised for Austria before halftime when he scored off the post. Unfortunately for Austria, VAR disallowed the goal due to a foul during the build-up.

Austria's return to FIFA’s premier competition marks their first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Despite being frustrated in the first half against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Austria maintained pressure and scored with their initial second-half shot on target.

Bosnia-Herzegovina struggled offensively after halftime and failed to challenge Alexander Shlager. Their expected goals tally was only 0.22 in the second half, highlighting their lack of attacking threat.

This qualification journey has been significant for several teams. Austria joins Scotland and Norway in ending long absences from World Cup participation. Meanwhile, Kosovo remains hopeful as they prepare for play-offs that could lead to their first-ever World Cup appearance.
