Austria World Cup 2026 Substitutes Boost Win Over Jordan

Austria opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan, helped by key substitutions and late composure. Marko Arnautovic came off the bench to score deep into stoppage time, sealing three points in San Francisco and extending Austria’s strong record in first World Cup meetings with opponents from different continents.

At 37 years and 59 days, Arnautovic set two age-related records with the goal. The forward became the fourth-oldest European scorer at a World Cup, behind Pepe, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gunnar Gren. Arnautovic also overtook Michael Konsel as Austria’s oldest World Cup player, surpassing Konsel’s appearance against Italy on 23 June 1998.

The match saw momentum shift several times. Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the first half, but Ali Olwan equalised within five minutes of the restart. Austria then had a goal ruled out before Yazan Al Arab diverted the ball into his own net, and Arnautovic struck in the 12th minute of stoppage time.

Ralf Rangnick accepted that Austria did not control every phase, yet highlighted the value of changes made during the game. It was an extremely difficult match. Jordan truly made life complicated for us, Rangnick said. The substitutions helped us immensely today as wellthey brought more quality to our play. Looking at the match as a whole, I think we picked up several important cues once again.

Rangnick had chosen [Sasa] Kalajdzic to start after strong training form over the previous two weeks. However, the forward found the pace and physical intensity demanding for a World Cup opener, which led Rangnick to introduce Arnautovic at half-time, using Arnautovic’s experience and strength to change the dynamic in attack.

The Austria head coach felt Jordan exceeded scouting expectations with their aggression and physical commitment. I expected Jordan to be strong, but they played even more powerfully than we had anticipated. [Sasa] Kalajdzic did very well in the training sessions for the last two weeks, and so it was just logical to have him start. He struggled a little bit when it came to the intensity and the physical need of this tournament, so that's when I brought in Marko at half-time. Marko also was very important, and his physical presence was very important to us.

Austria vs Jordan World Cup statistics and historical context

Jordan matched Austria in several areas despite the defeat, recording 11 shots and four on target, the same totals as their opponents. Jordan also struck the woodwork, but created only 0.5 expected goals, underlining the difficulty of turning pressure into clear chances against experienced European players.

Jordan’s defeat continues a long sequence for debutants at this level. Teams playing their first-ever World Cup match have now gone 17 games without a win, with four draws and 13 losses since Senegal beat France in 2002. Austria’s success against Jordan maintained that trend while strengthening Austria’s own record in cross-continent World Cup meetings.

Austria vs Jordan World Cup reaction from Jamal Sellami

Jordan head coach Jamal Sellami argued that the final score did not mirror Jordan’s display, stressing the courage shown against an Austria side featuring players from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Sellami also looked to the rest of the tournament with optimism despite the setback in their opening group fixture.

"I think that the result doesn't reflect the effort made by the Jordanian team, but personally I'm very happy and proud of their performance," Sellami told reporters. "No one was expecting us to be that bold, that proactive, and to be that capable of benefiting from the available opportunities. But we've not been able to win against Austria because it has players at Real Madrid [David Alaba] and Bayern Munich [Konrad Laimer]."

The match leaves Austria encouraged by depth options such as Arnautovic, while also aware of defensive moments that allowed Jordan back into the contest. For Jordan and Sellami, the performance against Austria provides confidence that the team can compete with established nations as the World Cup group stage continues.
