West Ham Captain Bowen Says Avoiding Relegation Would Be Bigger Than Conference League Win

Jarrod Bowen says avoiding relegation this season would outweigh West Ham’s 2023 Europa Conference League win. The captain feels the current battle for survival, and the pressure around it, makes this campaign the biggest test of Bowen’s time at London Stadium.

West Ham sit two points ahead of rivals Tottenham in the Premier League relegation fight, with four matches left. Tottenham are in 18th place, the last position in the bottom three, while Nuno Espirito Santo’s side try to stay clear of danger.

Bowen: Relegation fight bigger than trophy

The Opta supercomputer gives Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham a 59% chance of dropping into the Championship next season. That projection comes despite Tottenham securing a first Premier League victory of 2026 at Wolves, as other results kept the pressure on the north London club.

West Ham’s 2-1 win over Everton at London Stadium on 25 April proved crucial in that context. Callum Wilson struck in stoppage time to seal the comeback success. The result left Tottenham stuck in the relegation zone, while West Ham gained a vital boost in confidence and league position.

Even after lifting a European trophy three years earlier, Bowen feels this survival push would top his achievements. Bowen told The Athletic that the current situation, plus the burden of the captaincy, has made this season feel more intense than previous campaigns with West Ham.

"I think it would because of the circumstances, the season it's been the pressure that being captain brings," Bowen told The Athletic after Saturday's victory. "Being captain is a massive honour but the situation that we're in, it falls on your head and rightly so. I've been here a long time and people look at me for answers. I'm trying to bring my A-game week in, week out. Has it always been like that every week? No, but I'm not going to give up on this club, or on my team-mates. If I can help the team with goals and assists, I'll do that. If not, three points is the most important thing."

West Ham Premier League relegation context and attacking output

Bowen has been West Ham’s most productive attacking player in the league this season. Bowen has eight Premier League goals and 10 assists from 34 appearances. No other West Ham player matches either total, underlining the importance of Bowen’s contribution in the fight against relegation.

"We've got good players here that have stepped up in really important moments. When I'm not going to play as well as I'd like, which can happen, it's important that everyone else around you steps up. We've had goals and assists from different people, which is important."

West Ham still face a demanding run-in as the Premier League relegation battle continues. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team travel to Brentford, host Arsenal, visit Newcastle United and then welcome Leeds United. Each fixture could affect both West Ham’s future in the top flight and the wider survival picture.

Bowen’s form, combined with key contributions from team-mates, leaves West Ham with a narrow cushion over Tottenham. With four matches left and relegation still a real threat, every performance across those final weeks is likely to shape how this campaign is remembered at London Stadium.
