Multi-time winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were missing as the Ballon d'Or 2024 nominees was revealed on Wednesday (September 4), dominated by players who competed in the Euro 2024 earlier this year.
Ronaldo nor Messi did not make the cut for the first time since 2003. Ronaldo, a five-time winner from Portugal, was also absent from last year's nominations. Meanwhile, Messi, who holds the record with eight Ballon d'Or wins.

30 nominees in men's and women's categories were revealed for the Ballon d'Or ceremony which is set to be held on October 28 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Apart from the male and female Ballon d'Or nominees, nominations were also revealed for various other awards.
Among the 30 men, favourites Jude Bellingham, Rodri and Vinicius were included, while Spain's rising star Lamine Yamal, who was among the 10 nominees for the Kopa Trophy (young player award), has also been named alongside several of his other Euro-winning compatriots.
Real Madrid boasts an impressive seven nominees for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, with Kylian Mbappe, their recent signing from PSG, also in the nominees alongside Bellingham and Brazil's Vinicius Junior.
England, who finished as runners-up to Spain in the Euro 2024 tournament, have six players nominated in total. Apart from Bellingham, the list includes prolific striker Harry Kane, rising stars Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer, as well as midfielders Declan Rice and Phil Foden.
In the women's category, reigning Champions League winners Barcelona dominate with six nominees. Among them are last year's winner Aitana Bonmati and two-time recipient Alexia Putellas, showcasing the club's exceptional talent in women's football.
Aside from the Ballon d'Or and Kopa Trophy, more awards will given - Yashin Trophy (best goalkeeper), Muller Trophy (best striker award), Socrates Award (best humanitarian work by a footballer), Men's Club of the Year Trophy and Women's Club of the Year Trophy.
Two new accolades will be also added to the list of prizes: Men's Coach of the Year Trophy and Women's Coach of the Year Trophy, recognising the invaluable contribution of coaches to success on the pitch. Here is a look at the nominees:
