Barcelona managed to secure a spot in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in six years. Despite losing 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund, they advanced with a 5-3 aggregate score. Serhou Guirassy's hat-trick for Dortmund handed Barcelona their first defeat of the year across all competitions. However, it wasn't enough to overturn Barcelona's commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg.
Dortmund started strong at Signal Iduna Park, earning a penalty in the eighth minute after Pascal Gross was fouled by Wojciech Szczesny. Guirassy confidently converted the penalty, setting the tone for an intense match. Although Felix Nmecha and Gross combined for another goal soon after, it was disallowed due to offside. Dortmund kept pressing with half-chances through Gross and Karim Adeyemi, but Barcelona held firm.

In the second half, Guirassy scored again in the 49th minute, heading in Ramy Bensebaini's pass. However, Bensebaini inadvertently gave Barcelona some relief by scoring an own goal following Gerard Martin's cross. Guirassy completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute by capitalising on Ronald Araujo's clearance to score past Szczesny.
Julian Brandt had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after Guirassy's third goal. Despite Dortmund's continued efforts, they couldn't find the two additional goals needed to force extra time. As Dortmund ran out of steam, Barcelona narrowly escaped with their aggregate lead intact. Hansi Flick will be aware that such defensive lapses could be costly as they prepare for a semi-final against either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich.
Despite Dortmund's exit, Guirassy can take pride in his performance. He is now the tournament's top scorer with 13 goals this season. This achievement makes him the first Dortmund player to surpass 10 goals in a single campaign, breaking records previously held by Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.
Guirassy also joined an elite group of Dortmund players who have scored a hat-trick in the Champions League. He follows Lewandowski (April 2013), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (March 2017), and Karim Adeyemi (October 2024). His efforts contributed significantly to Dortmund achieving an expected goals tally of 3.85 compared to Barcelona’s modest 0.49 xG.
Barcelona will need to address their vulnerabilities before facing tougher opponents in their upcoming semi-final clash.
