Barcelona sign most lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike in Football History, set to earn in Billions

FC Barcelona has officially announced a new sponsorship agreement with Nike, which is reportedly the most lucrative in football history. The partnership, effective from this season, was communicated through a press release and social media.

The club highlighted that Nike will remain its primary partner and official technical supplier for all teams. This partnership aims to enhance brand collaboration and boost global retail and licensing operations. Nike will play an integral role in FC Barcelona's retail strategies alongside Barça Licensing & Merchandising.

"FC Barcelona and Nike, two leading brands in the sport industry, are pleased to announce a new start with a multi-year partnership agreement, starting effective this season, that brings a new collaborative strategic partnership model between the two organizations," the official statement from Barcelona read.

"This new partnership consolidates Nike as a Main Partner of the Club and Official Technical Partner across all professional and amateur teams, bringing a unique model that strengthens the brands association and fuels the global retail and licensing business growth. Nike has a key strategic role in the Club's Retail Operations and together with Barça Licensing & Merchandising will join forces in the development of specific plans related to product creation, supply chain and global distribution," the statement further added.

Historical Partnership and Achievements

Since their initial agreement in 1998, FC Barcelona and Nike have shared a commitment to innovation and excellence. Over the years, this partnership has witnessed numerous triumphs on the field. The club has secured four Champions League titles, 12 La Liga championships, three Club World Cups, and three European Super Cups during this period.

Barcelona & Nike: Financial Details of the Agreement

Although specific financial details were not disclosed by the club, reports from Mundo Deportivo and Culemania suggest that FC Barcelona will receive $1.82 billion (€1.7 billion) over 14 seasons. This translates to an average of approximately $129.5 million (€121 million) annually, which is around Rs 1100 crore in Indian currency. Hence, in the period of the deal, Barcelona are set to get more than Rs 15,000 crore from the solitary Nike deal.

The deal is expected to see an increase in payments from 2024 to 2028 by around $51.4 million (€48 million) each year. Beyond 2028, the annual amount could rise by $62 million (€58 million) to $64 million (€60 million). This makes it one of the most financially rewarding sponsorship deals ever in soccer.

Despite these substantial figures, it is believed that the funds from Nike may not fully address Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns related to recent signings such as Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. The club continues to navigate these financial challenges while celebrating this new partnership milestone.

The agreement's finalization was initially anticipated for next week; however, developments accelerated unexpectedly on Thursday night. According to Culemania director Victor Malo, this led President Joan Laporta to convene an emergency board meeting on Friday to approve the deal.
