Barry Bannan Leaves Sheffield Wednesday For Millwall After A Decade At Hillsborough

Barry Bannan departs Sheffield Wednesday after over 10 years to join Millwall on an 18‑month contract. The longtime Owls captain leaves with 477 appearances and 38 goals, amid Wednesday’s relegation struggle. Millwall, aiming for promotion, strengthened midfield options as Bannan seeks fresh challenges.

Barry Bannan leaves Sheffield Wednesday after more than a decade to join Millwall on an 18-month contract, with the Championship side targeting promotion to the Premier League. The 36-year-old moves for an undisclosed fee, switching from a relegation fight to a push near the top.

The midfielder’s final Sheffield Wednesday outing came in a 2-0 defeat at Bristol City, where supporters of both clubs gave a standing ovation. Bannan’s contract at Hillsborough had been due to run out at the end of this season.

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed Millwall’s interest followed that loss at Bristol City, with manager Henrik Pedersen explaining that Bannan had requested to depart. The club remains in administration and sits 20 points adrift at the bottom, with -7 points from 23 Championship matches.

In a statement on their website, Wednesday outlined how the offer suited Bannan’s ambitions. They said Millwall’s proposal gave the midfielder a chance to compete for promotion, even though the decision to leave Hillsborough after 10-and-a-half years was described as being taken "with a heavy heart."

Bannan joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in August 2015 and went on to record 477 appearances in all competitions. That total places Bannan sixth on the club’s all-time list of appearance makers. During that spell, the midfielder contributed 38 goals from midfield for the Owls.

This Championship season, Bannan has been central to Wednesday’s play. The midfielder leads the squad for passes, successful passes, touches, interceptions and possession won. The detailed numbers underline that influence, despite the club’s struggles in the table.

Millwall, who sit fourth in the Championship after a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic on Saturday, are six points behind the automatic promotion positions. Bannan’s arrival adds experience and leadership to a squad already competing strongly for a return to the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday paid tribute to the long-serving captain in their statement, saying: "Barry leaves Sheffield Wednesday as one of the club's modern greats, an inspirational leader on both sides of the white line. Through promotion pushes, relegation battles and periods of extreme difficulty, his commitment, professionalism and passion for Sheffield Wednesday have never wavered. He departs with the deepest respect and gratitude of everyone at Hillsborough, and we all hope he returns to Sheffield Wednesday in some capacity in the future."

The social media post underlined Bannan’s bond with the club and fanbase. After a decade of service, Wednesday highlighted the midfielder’s professionalism and influence, while Millwall gain an experienced figure for their promotion chase as the Championship season moves into its final stages.
