Brazil: Footballer collapses on field, dies

Rio de Janeiro, May 9: A football player in Brazil's second division league died under a mysterious circumstances on Saturday, May 7.

Mesquita's midfielder Fred lost his conciousness during a match between Cabofriense and Mesquita, in the 13th round of the second division of the Rio de Janeiro state championship.

The incident took place in the 36th minute of the first half of the match.

Ambulance was brought on to the field and the paramedics tried to revive Fred but in vain. He was rushed to the hospitals where doctors declared brought dead.

In the wake of the incident, the referees suspended the match.

"The referees acted correctly by suspending the match. There was no other way to handle it. The result of a soccer match is definetly not as important as the life of a human being," Valdemir Mendes, president of Cabofriense, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The cause of Fred's unfortunate death is yet to be ascertain.
