Battle for Indian Football’s Future? AIFF Chief Kalyan Chaubey vs Bhaichung Bhutia Row Escalates

By MyKhel Staff

In a strongly worded statement, All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey has openly rebuked fellow Executive Committee member and Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia, accusing him of consistently making "baseless allegations" and painting a "distorted image" of the AIFF since his defeat in the 2022 presidential elections.

The statement, pointed in tone and political in posture - signals a growing rift at the top of Indian football's governing body and lays bare the internal friction that has simmered beneath the surface since the change in leadership.

Chaubey began by reiterating the AIFF's official slogans, tying them to the federation's broader vision. "We follow two slogans - 'Football unites the world' and 'Indian football, forward together'. These slogans reflect our shared vision, and I firmly believe that by working together, we can take Indian football to greater heights," he said.

But the message quickly pivoted to a direct and public criticism of Bhutia. While acknowledging Bhutia's constitutional right to freedom of speech and his position within the AIFF's decision-making body, Chaubey was unequivocal in his assessment of Bhutia's conduct since the 2022 polls.

"It has been observed that since Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia's defeat in the September 2022 elections, he has consistently and deliberately made baseless allegations and presented a distorted image of the AIFF," Chaubey claimed, warning that such actions "not only tarnish the reputation of the Federation, but also throw Indian football in a negative light on international platforms."

This is one of the strongest public rebukes yet from the AIFF chief, marking a moment of escalating internal discord - one that could have implications for how the football ecosystem views transparency and dissent within the federation.

While Bhutia's specific statements or criticisms were not cited directly in the press release, the tone makes clear that the AIFF views them as disruptive. However, Chaubey also attempted to strike a note of openness, maintaining that the federation remains receptive to positive contributions.

"The AIFF always remains open to constructive suggestions from Mr. Bhutia for the growth and betterment of Indian football," Chaubey stated, before alleging that in most Executive Committee meetings, Bhutia's input had been largely adversarial. "It is unfortunate that in most Executive Committee meetings, his contributions have primarily centred around opposing decisions made collectively by the entire board, rather than offering substantial proposals."

Despite the criticisms, Chaubey confirmed that Bhutia has been formally invited to attend the next AIFF Executive Committee meeting on July 2, 2025 - a meeting that could become a flashpoint if the underlying tensions are not resolved.

"Mr. Bhutia is most welcome to participate... The official invitation for his attendance was extended by the AIFF Secretariat on June 11, 2025. He is encouraged to present any constructive proposals during the meeting, which will be duly deliberated upon by the entire executive board in the spirit of transparency, collaboration, and the collective development of Indian football," the AIFF President concluded.
