The performance highlighted Wirtz's growing influence in European football. At just 21 years old, he has scored 17 goals in major European competitions, matching Lionel Messi's record before turning 22.

Wirtz has now scored five goals in his first five Champions League appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. This achievement sets a new record for German players in their initial five games in the competition. His contributions were crucial to what became one of Leverkusen's largest victories in major European football history.

This triumph equalled their previous best results of 5-0 against Budapest Honved in November 1994 and Zurich in December 2007, both during UEFA Cup matches. Only Erling Haaland (23), Kylian Mbappe (21), and Ronaldo (20) have surpassed Wirtz's goal tally before turning 22.
