Bayer Leverkusen Suffer Stoppage-time Defeat As Augsburg's Rieder Seals Win

Fabian Rieder converted a penalty in the 97th minute to give Augsburg a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen, ending Leverkusen’s seven-match unbeaten Bundesliga run and denying Kasper Hjulmand’s side the chance to move within one point of the Champions League spots.

Leverkusen had appeared on course for at least a draw at the BayArena after dominating large spells and creating chances worth 3.36 expected goals, yet wasteful finishing and a standout display from Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen turned a controlled performance into a damaging home defeat.

Leverkusen edged by stoppage-time penalty

The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Montrell Culbreath brought down Uchenna Ogundu inside the area, giving Augsburg a last-gasp opportunity, and Rieder stayed calm from 12 yards, sending Mark Flekken the wrong way to complete a match-winning brace.

Earlier, Leverkusen had struck first as Patrik Schick rose to glance in a superb header on 12 minutes, but the lead was short-lived, with Augsburg level soon after when Rieder fired in from the edge of the box following a poorly cleared corner from the hosts.

While Leverkusen created the greater volume of chances, Augsburg always threatened on transition, forcing Flekken into an important stop to prevent a second breakaway goal, yet it was Dahmen’s work that proved decisive, with the goalkeeper producing nine saves to frustrate Hjulmand’s side throughout.

Leverkusen’s pressure was relentless at times, with the hosts registering 35 attempts and 10 shots on target, while spending long phases in advanced positions, yet composure deserted them when it mattered, in contrast to Augsburg, who punished defensive lapses and finished clinically.

Hjulmand had previously criticised Leverkusen’s conversion rate, and those concerns resurfaced as the team recorded 61 touches inside Augsburg’s penalty area and 78 entries into the final third but left without any points, remaining sixth in the table after a costly missed opportunity at home.

For Augsburg, Rieder’s double and Dahmen’s resilience turned a difficult away assignment into a statement victory, while Leverkusen are left reflecting on dominance without reward and the challenge of improving efficiency in front of goal as the race for European qualification tightens.
