Bayer Leverkusen have secured Mark Flekken as the first acquisition of the Erik ten Hag era. The goalkeeper joins from Brentford for a reported fee of 10 million (8 million) plus additional clauses. This move comes as Leverkusen prepare for their inaugural season under former Ajax and Manchester United manager Ten Hag, following Xabi Alonso's departure to Real Madrid.
Flekken, a 31-year-old Netherlands international, has committed to a three-year contract with Leverkusen. He previously joined Brentford from Freiburg in 2023 and played 74 Premier League matches over two seasons in west London. His experience is expected to bolster Leverkusen's squad as they aim for success under new management.

Brentford's director of football, Phil Giles, expressed gratitude for Flekken's contributions, stating: "Mark has proven to be a seamless replacement for David Raya, who set an extremely high standard during his years with us. We were expecting Mark to be our goalkeeper for many more years." Giles acknowledged Flekken's desire to move closer to home and pursue Champions League opportunities with Leverkusen.
Flekken's performance in the English top flight was notable last season. He achieved seven clean sheets and maintained a save percentage of 73.17%. Among goalkeepers with more than five appearances, only Chelsea's Robert Sanchez surpassed this figure with a save percentage of 73.23%.
Lukas Hradecky was Leverkusen's primary goalkeeper last season, appearing in 29 out of 34 Bundesliga games. Matej Kovar played in the remaining five matches. However, with Hradecky turning 36 in November and having just one year left on his contract, Leverkusen sought a younger option in Flekken.
Meanwhile, Brentford are reportedly close to securing Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool as Flekken's replacement. The Bees are said to be nearing an agreement worth 18 million for the Liverpool backup goalkeeper.
Flekken leaves Brentford with appreciation from the club and its supporters. "Mark has done a great job for us and leaves with our thanks and support," Giles added. As he transitions to Bayer Leverkusen, both clubs look forward to new chapters in their respective journeys.
