Bayer Leverkusen have secured the services of Ernest Poku, a promising Dutch Under-21 international, from AZ Alkmaar. The 21-year-old winger has signed a contract that extends until 2030, with the transfer fee reportedly around €10 million (£8.6 million). Poku underwent his medical examination in Leverkusen on Monday before finalising the four-year deal.
Poku's recent performances for AZ have been impressive. He played a key role in their opening match of the season, contributing to a 4-1 victory over Groningen. Throughout his time at AZ, Poku made 49 appearances and was involved in 11 goals. His contributions were also vital for the Netherlands' Under-21 team during their European Championship campaign this summer, where they reached the semi-finals.

During his tenure at AZ, Poku was instrumental in their Europa League journey last season. He provided three assists as AZ advanced to the knockout stages before being eliminated by eventual champions Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16. His performances have not gone unnoticed, leading to his move to Bayer Leverkusen.
In an Instagram post addressed to AZ supporters, Poku expressed gratitude for his time at the club: "After almost four seasons, it feels like it is time to make a move. Thank you AZ, thanks to all of you. To the AZ fans: your support has always been there. In good and difficult times."
Poku is expected to make his debut for Bayer Leverkusen in their DFB Pokal first-round match against Grossaspach on Friday, August 15. Fans are eager to see how he will adapt and contribute to his new team in Germany.
This transfer marks a significant step in Poku's career as he transitions from Dutch football to one of Europe's top leagues. His potential and past performances suggest he could become an important player for Bayer Leverkusen in the coming years.
